Random thought/question.

Post by So Many Kinds of Bagels »

I was just kinda scrolling through the site, looking at random threads, when I had a thought. Since the Gameboy/Advance is already small and portable, could you work it into another portable? Would there be a way to toggle playing Gameboy games and the games of whatever your portable is? I don't think it's completely useless, because you would only have to bring one portable wherever you plan to take it. I don't know. I have no experience, and it was just a thought.

If you can find a way to get an acceptable video signal out of it then it's possible.
Meh, I don't post much.

Aha, I can answer this one!

Yes, of course you could amalgamate the GBA with another console, however there is one proviso - you need to have the GBA with TV-output; the GBA Transverter is the best one. (see my topic in the "news" section - BigBoy Advance). You need to have the GBA with RGB output as composite from the GBA is poor. You could hook up the audio and video input to run into one PSone screen, so whichever device is on at the time would output to the PSone screen and also connect the controller buttons to shared button switches (easy too). You would need to use a switch to flip between the GBA and whatever for power. If you remove the GBA screen and just use its mobo you could just use a pair of 1.5v batteries without using a TI card as the battery power would last a long time if it only runs the GBA card - put it this way, you got well over 10 hours use from a pair of AA batteries on a GBA typically (good AA's), and that is running with the GBA screen...

I am quite tempted to do this in my N64p project; I had thought of this as a possibility before anyway (and left it in the back of my mind), and I may possibly have enough space to do it in my current project (not sure yet).....I will consider this as an option....

8)

Yes, the GBA is quite small, however the Transverter means you have two mobos and they need siting very close to each other (ribbon cable is very small). Using a GBA flash card is sensible so you don't have to open the case much, if at all, to change games

Aha. Yea, I saw your latest N64 project update, and thought, "Hey, that answered my question!". I opened my thread up and sure enough, you answered very informatively.

Thanks, and good luck. :D

Yes, you can incorporate another project, however as per my topic, there are problems you will need to overcome - I did it with home-made buttons (see my thread) and switches. If you are sharing a button or more between two systems, there is a very good chance that one controller might conflict with the other one, especially (as I found) with an N64 and GBA. You need to keep the contacts separate, including those for the D-pad. You also need to make sure that when one system is working, the other gets no power, or again, you can have conflicts. You basically need both systems separate, yet integrated.
