I need your help to make my next n64p pwn!

Post by ShockSlayer »

Ok, I wont be starting on my next for a while, But I need to start saving up cash now. I got a job at school for cash, so this should be easy to fund.

What I need YOUR help with, is finding the perfect battery solution.

I need to know:

How much juice an un-modded pso screen takes
How much a led modded one takes
How much each voltage line on the n64 takes
The perfect, highest quality Stepdown for 3.3v exactly
The best 12v battery that will last for 1 hour and 30 mins while its powering n64 and screen

If I knew all of these things, my portables would be much higher quality.
I'm talking Benheck quality.

12V Battery!?

Isn't 9.6 Enough!? I'd use an RC car battery 9.6V 1800 mAH.

Why would you want to lug around a 12V battery?

Search the forums for the first 2 questions, they've been answered many a time.

You can use a 7.2v battery if you want. And just aboiut everything else is in the sticky/wiki.

7.2 is enough! Geez! (Why does everyone use the most voltage they can?)

Use 6 of these. You'll get about 5-6 hours, similar to what I'm using.

Oh, and the 12v line takes 6v or up (To about 16v) as it uses a regulator, and the other line takes 3.2-3.3.

Use a TI converter. Best way to get 3.3v. Buy one if you must, samples are better!

I spent several hours before starting my portable, reading all the threads in the N64 forum getting most of the technical answers and doing research.

The N64 part of my portable uses a car adapter, outputs about 2.89v (1 amp), and the other voltage is about 7.39v (if I remember the figures correctly - see my thread); all off one mains line (the PSone mains line, 7.5v, 3 amp). I believe the lower voltage can be down to about 2.8v if I remember correctly. Sure, you just want to use batteries you need a step-down converter, however the voltages will be the same. I couldn't get my TI board to work properly, otherwise my system would use an Expansion Pack instead of a Jumper Pak. I have the space for it.

Working off memory, an unmodded PSone screen takes about 750 mAh, modded is about 350 mAh (I think this is right?). As I said, figures off the top of my head.

The PSone screen is likely to blow over 9v so there is no point going over 8.5v max on batteries and anyway, the N64 mobo doesn't need even this amount. That's why many of the mods use 7.2v/7.4v or slightly higher. Forget about 12v, waste of power.

As I said at the start of this reply, trudge through the forum posts, very interesting reading and gives you your answers. With the hundreds of posts over the last 3 years or so there is a mine of information.

The one part I would welcome answers to is if anyone has a good alternative to the TI board for the step-down (theirs won't be the only ones)?? I don't mind buying one, after all, I have spent a bit on the rest of the project! I gave up on the TI, couldn't make it work. I asked them for some samples, and got an e-mail from them to say they cancelled my request order. Sheesh.

PS - you say "BenHeck quality" - you will need to make your cases look very pretty indeed to make any claim like that! (ahem)

Just out of curiosity, what does the power stuff have to do with making your portables look like Ben's? Case construction seems to be your biggest weakness (its one of mine, laziness is another  ), so you might want to plan that aspect of it a bit better.

@shockslayer: you've made about 3 N64 portables now, shouldn't we be asking you these questions by now?

That is a damn good question  How the hell did you make an n64 portable without this knowledge?

Battery life an case are my only 2 problems.

I want 12v, simply because, I do. (Or maybe for another hidden reason)

Can anyone wire me one of the TI sample? I never could figure out mine, for it was different than the one diagrammed.

There are three types of TI board shown in the forum, not one. So they are all shown.

Look in the forum!

Did you sell your last N64p? If you didn't you can use its bits and make a nicer one...

 Does that mean I'd have to use a 7805 if I wanted to use a 9.6V battery?

No, you need a 7808, check bic's site for instructions on making a 7805 into a 7808.
