Why did my screen go black and white?

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

Why did my screen go black and white?

Post by RobbyWasabi »

I'm new and I was finishing my n64 portable, and after about 4-5 hours I checked on it. When I turned it on the screen was black and white.

What screen are you using? And what type of video? RGB, S-video or composite?

Check your power source. I had a problem like this, I forget what the problem was, but it had something to do with the power source. Check for Over/Under Current, and Over/Under Voltage.

Make sure your screen's ribbon cable is secured properly. That caused my ps one screen to go black and white.
Meh, I don't post much.

If it goes black completely then white completely (flashing), it is likely that there isn't enough power going into the N64. I got this when I tried to replace my Jumper Pak with the Expansion Pack (my car adapter takes a lot of juice).

If the screen just gets whiter and whiter until it is just white, it is low battery power to the screen.

Anyway, that is my experience, hope it helps.

Thanks for responding, but the screeen is a 5.4 tft gamecube lcd. What should I fix, the ribbon cable or should replace some of the wiring, also I don't think the power is messed up because the backlight works perfectly. I'm using a li-poly 5400 battery; it is similar to ben's ps2 battery.

That screen is t3h suxzors. But turn the orange knobs. They adjust things like Contrast, colour, brightness, and one or two more things I believe. One of them will make it work right again.

Yup. Anyways fixing it is simple. How exactly does it not work. Does it just cease to function? If so check all the solder joints and make sure nothing is broken off.

After doing a thorough examination of it and it still doesn't work, try replacing it with a resistor. A different value will yield a different result.

I tried to add resistor but it didn't work, so I'm just going to LED mod it so it can take AA batteries and I'm going to seal it. right now it poweres off 5400 mah, it might with 2100 mah AA's. The portable is a n64 franken case with a cart slot relocation, but doesn't posess a controller because I don't have an extra analog stick and I really would like to know how to mod it so the analog would work with a d-pad. I might do the LED mod later because I'm out of money and the LED's cost a lot, I might post up pics later because the unit is almost done. It still sucks that my screen doesn't have any color, I'm really fed up with this portable right now.
