Its because the 89 is banned on tests like the ACT and SAT, its too good to accurately test your knowledge, so you might as well get used to it (though you could get/write programs for the 84+ to do most of your work, multiple choice tests FTW).

I know, my friend wrote an app for the 84+ that does what the reason my calculator can't be used for. Basically I guess I have no choice but to get the 84+ SE (6x more memory for..."educational" games lol)

I start the 30th of August and will be going into 8th grade. I have a question for all of you. How do you guys not get caught using all this stuff in class? Do your teachers not care? Or are you guys using some techniques that I dont know about?

Well, calculators are best in math class, ztetris is good because I can play it out of the corner of my eye and pause/exit easy, so I'm facing the teacher but looking at my calculator on my desk. Thats the main thing, if its sitting on your desk in plain view the don't suspect games as much.
Flash drives are pretty easy if the computers are under the desk, just pile your crap in front of it if they aren't allowed. Or get a hub or USB extension cable and leave the drive in your backpack or binder, a cable is a lot easier to hide. I usually only use my flash drive for bringing files to school that I downloaded at home and then I copy them to my drive I have on the network at school (like portable firefox, I had an almost exact copy of my home FF setup on my school drive, except I had an IE theme and other disguising things). So I amazed everyone with my tabs and the fact that java stuff and web sites that didn't work in IE magically worked on my computer.
Music players and game systems techniques generally vary from teacher to teacher and where you sit in the class in relation to the front and the teacher's desk (its usually best if their desk is at the front). Headphones also depend on skin and hair color (just run them up your shirt from the device in your pocket, you should already know that). Dark skin+dark hair make it easy to hide dark headphones, while light skin+light hair make white headphones best. When you're looking at the device, its usually its not where you hide the device, but how you look at it that determines your likelihood of being caught.

So maybe don't use the ipod and game boy for the first while, and observe what others do and what works for each teacher and apply that to what you do.

Well we dont have computers at our school. I wish we did but we dont. Also with the calculator thing my friend did that and brought it to pre algebra. The teacher asked why he needed such a high tech calculator in her class and then he got it taken away for playing a game. My hair is pretty long so I can probably do the ipod thing. One more question. Do you think it would be a good idea to bring a gba flash cart and a micro t school? It is really small so it wont be as easy to see. just an idea.

I used to play my N-Gage in 7th Grade all the time and the sad thing was that I was in the top 3% of the Middle School Grade-wise. Basically I earn Teacher respect. Like in my one Speech Class last year we had like nothing to do so our teacher let us just screw around, listen to music, etc.

In Highschool I usually use my Calculator. Once again I have the teachers respect and usually I have finished my work so I just play on my calculator like the rest of the class.

I would say go for the Micro if your grades are good and have Teacher respect and know the teacher wouldn't notice.

I love my life, seriously. I can ace classes without doing much hard work, just doing homework. My teachers freaking rock.

Sounds kinda like me (except for in math and english). In biology last year, last term, our term project was to observe 8 things in nature and right a page and draw or take a picture about each one. He also said that if we got 90% or more on the end of level test that we would get an A in the class as long as we had all our stuff turned in. Well, I knew I was as good as guaranteed 90% on the test, so I decided I'd just do a half crap job on the term project (and everything else, but I'd been doing that all year). So I completely forget about the term project til the day its due and I had to turn one in, so I hurried and bs'd a page about my cat and drew a horrid picture of her. Guess what my grade was for doing 1/8th of the work. 75%!!!! And then I got like 96% on the test, I love having good multiple choice test skills.

@VV: While it is pretty pointless to have a graphing calculator in pre-algebra, I don't think its questioned by many teachers here (I skipped pre-algebra and got a crappy algebra teacher, I think thats part of the reason I crashed in math). I really like having the big screen even for simple stuff, it helps you see mistakes in your input and change them easier, too.
And how can you not have computers at your school? Do you live in the middle of nowhere? Do teachers even have them?

Well we have computers at our school. We just have really old IBM's and I havent seen a single person use one. They are spread out through the classes (math, english etc) but no one uses them. The computers just have layers and layers and layers of dust on them. Its pretty dumb. Dont you guys remember? We dont have lockers at my school either. Just pe lockers. Freakin drug addicts.

I guess I can't speak for myself... I didn't go to High-School. I've been in between 4th grade and college for quite a few years now. I was pulled out of school because my mother didn't feel I was getting adequate education and she's also a big worrier about... you know... school shootings 'n stuff... I didn't object to it though, and I still don't. Homeschooling has been really easy on me, and since it's one-on-one, I gain more knowledge, more efficiently, in far less time. I mostly learn on my own these days though. The only downside is that I don't really have any friends... but I'm 17 now, so I'll be going to college soon anyway. Plenty of time to socialize then. I just need to study a bit for my GED and I'll be set.

Whats cool is that this year at my school, headphones and cell phones are banned in class, so your teacher will take them away and give them to the office and you get a gradually harsher punishment for each incident. But, the rule says nothing about the device itself (only that the headphones being used to listen to it will be taken away), so I'm going to use every loophole to my advantage. I'm first going to have several pairs of headphones, so they take one away, and as they get back to the front of the class, I magically have another set in my ears (will be best if I can get identical pairs). Second idea is bringing some computer speakers and a SLA battery to listen with (cause speakers=/=headphones). Third is to just hold my PSP up to my ear like its a boombox and listen with the internal speakers. Forth idea is to just play SM64, no sound, then there are no headphones to be taken away. Of course I'll have to find a teacher strict enough to enforce the rule (I know I sound crazy, but I dislike teachers that don't enforce rules) and have a good sense of humor about it at the same time (cause its not my fault theres loopholes).

My school isn't nearly as lenient. Starting the beginning of last year, they outright banned iPods/phones/game systems from the school. Last year, a friend of mine got my GP2X taken and it cost me a detention (not cool). If we could still have that stuff, my arsenal would be this.

What things specifically? My friends and I have written various programs to help us out (and some of mine show work ). If my friends and I gave our programs to an incoming Freshman, they'd not have to do jack spit until Junior year.

My parents did the same thing, except they pulled me out after kindergarten. That changes this year though since, I can't stand being around my family 24/7 anymore.

I've actually been enrolled in a distance learning program (NARHS) since my freshman year, so I already have most of the credits I need to graduate, thus I'll be primarily beefing up my electives these last two years*.






*Due to where my birthday falls and the differences between the required credit distribution in Maine, where NARHS is based, and Connecticut, where I'll be going to my new brick-and-mortar school, I've chosen to take an extra year by enrolling as Junior instead of Senior. Which really just means I get to take a bunch of classes I like while gradually making up some small discrepancies. I will miss watching TV while doing the boring stuff though.

I got a TI 84 Plus Silver Edition today and I was wondering if anyone knew of any good Apps/games for it? It can run 83, 83+, and 84+(SE) Apps and Games. So far I have:

Noshell Patched Firmware (Runs ION, MirageOS, etc. without the programs and can run any program from archive)
MirageOS (Just for the heck of it)

I only used 200kb of 1.5 MB of my archive space, so if anyone has suggestions for killer Apps/games please tell me. I'm Taking Algebra II and Geometry this year so Apps for those courses would help. And I've looked at ticalc.org but theres like 10 different files named the same thing and I have no idea what to download and what not to. Thanks.
