White out and Optical Disc Players

Can White out damage a DVD/CD/LD Player if applied to the label surface? My brother has been putting White Out on a DVD+RW before he recorded something. Now its screwing up when we try to record a movie to DVD.

Could the White Out have caused this problem?

I think It did.

Maybe some pieces flaked off into the drive? That used to happen when white-out was used on floppy labels back in the day.

The white-out could have also thrown the disc off balance too much for the drive. This might just be BS but anything's possible.

Next time use a dry erase marker, or write with a Sharpie and erase with rubbing alcohol.

Well, I have been putting my North and South tapes on DVD (Its going got $100+ for all 3 seres', screw that) and I can fit 3 episodes a disc. I only have enough time to do 2 episodes a day though. Every day when i try to start finish a disc, it deletes the disc and I have to start all over (Its been going on with tape 10-12).

If I try to record it some times it says there is an error.

Solution: Stop being gay and get a DVD-RW drive and video capture card for your computer.

j/k Sorry, I had to bash your DVD recorder... I hate them so much.

What bicostp said seems accurate... the best thing you can do right now is shake it around a bit and see if you can hear what may be white-out flakes shaking around inside. Then try to look inside it with a flashlight to see if you can spot the problem without opening it up. The only other thing I can suggest without opening it up is to get a lens cleaning CD with those little bristles on the bottom.

Your best bet is probably to open it up, and VERY CAREFULLY clean the lens with a VERY small amount of rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab. Under no circumstances should the swab drip with rubbing alcohol. Shake the swab out a bit to get rid of some of the fluid. Use the other side of the swab to wipe the lens dry, and make sure you don't leave any cotton fibers on the lens.

Dunno why I just wrote a paragraph on how to clean an optical lens... I'm sure you pretty much know what to do...

Anyway, let us know how it goes. Oh, and if you have the model number of your recorder, that might help. If it's a popular model, there may be a guide online on how to do a laser adjustment.

How many times have you used the disc? Maybe it's just worn out from too many writes.
