xbox running with vga on a lcd monitor

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

xbox running with vga on a lcd monitor

Post by specter539 »

I am trying to do what ben did with the 360 with a normal xbox. i plan on getting the same monitor he used. (the westinghouse 17inch widescreen lcd) After doing some research i found that this is very difficult to do and i am lost as to how i would do this. A pin out would help in connecting this to a vga cable, but is there anybody that has hooked a normal xbox into their computer monitor with out using a computer of course. It cant be portable if you have to lug around a computer too.

Original xbox wasn't really "vga supported" I believe it involves a complexish mod and a special firmware. (don't hold me on this though) It's definitly not like with the 360 wich is standard supported.

what is the biggest/cheapest screen that will run with composite video then? I know i could get a lcd monitor with a tv hook up but i just think that would take up too much room. this is going to be in a pretty good sized laptop (like bens 360 laptop) so i need a screen 10 inches or greater

Don't use Composite on such a big screen; It will look awful. Get a TV that has S-Video input, maybe Component if the Xbox supports it.

Is it possible at all to hook up the xbox in some way to a vga monitor. My friend said to use s-video from the xbox and put it into the vga some how. Im not sure what he was talking about. I want to use a 17" widescreen monitor because they have nice displays and are cheap. If theres any way to connect the xbox to the westinghouse 17" lcd widescreen monitor please help me out.

Refer to XboxLinux's guide for VGA. You have to patch the BIOS and you might have to build a sync-splitter if your monitor doesn't support sync-on-green.

Whoa, you will get a very lousy picture if you aren't at 1:1 pixel resolution, the internal scaling chips on these LCD panels are crap and I have never seen a 640x480 resolution LCD (The original Xbox can only be modded to output 480p).

My recommendation is to just pick up an X360 for $189 at Gamestop.com and use it as-is, get the 20GB HDD for $60 there too if you want to play Xbox games on it. The beauty of the Xbox360 is that it supports native LCD resolutions and VGA stock, no mods.

I am using my Xbox right now with a Tube VGA monitor (The big, old style), I would never recommend an LCD unless used with a Line-Doubling box that can turn 640x480 into 1280x960 and letterbox it for a 1280x1024 monitor (The only kind they make.) Since these boxes are more expensive than the X360 and hard to find, I really recommend that the cheapest route is a real Xbox 360.

LCD scaling is terrible, and every X360 I have ever seen in a store is running a non-native resolution on its LCD (Nevermind the overdone, IE crappy, HDR that makes phantom sparkles on nearly every title, and the improperly set contrast which isn't helping), you would think that the store doesn't want to make a sale  .
