Looking to buy a laptop. Need some advice.

Man, I REALLY wanted an HP or a Compaq because my uncle can get them for 60-80% off... Are you guys telling me there are NO good HP laptops?

We have a Compaq desktop, it screwed up within the first month we had it (this was like 4 or 5 years ago), I think it was hardware caused, we got it replaced and its been fine ever since. You could get one with your discount and then sell it if you wanted a different brand.

Sorry to be totally hijacking this thread, but are there any good Dell laptops for video editing? Or would I be better off spending my money on RAM and Harddrive space on my desktop?

Desktop>laptop when it comes to high performance stuff. Laptops are for doing small things on the go (internet browsing, word processing, etc), desktops are for doing big things at home (bleeding-edge gaming, video editing, etc).

Well, it's an AMD Athlon 64 Processor
2.01 GHz, 1 GB of RAM and about 500 GB of harddrive space total. (Not close to that available.)

I'd say swap out the Mobo and AMD for a Core 2 Duo and a mobo. Get another 3 GB of ram and whats Graphics card do you have?

If you have a decent card already you can trick that baby out for under $500 i bet.

I've been looking into this card and it seems to be pretty good. The main reason I want it is because it's better than my current card (and my current card does everything the way i want it to) but this one is fanless (and my current card is as loud as a freaking jet engine). Any thoughts from anyone? I'm also sorry for hijacking the thread lol

I've got an Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT. I think it's sort of old, but for gaming it's really good. I can put every setting is every game I have in the highest level, and I get no lag.

I'm not really educated in this stuff, I have no idea if this card is good.

Well I have the Nvidia GeForce 6800 and it also is old but it plays all my games (UT 2004, WoW, not BF 2142 or anything) on high settings with no lag.

I think your card is fine. Just get a new mobo, Core 2 Duo E6600 and 2 GB or more total Ram.

It all depends usually on how long you want your video to compile at higher quality. My Core 2 Duo Macbook takes about 30 Minutes for Super High Quality DVD copies of any movie I make, and it has no graphics card and only has 1 GB of Ram.

I would recommend that you go with a comparable Dell. If you think you might drop it or something then go with a Latitude over the Inspiron line. It's only a little more expensive and it's more rugged and easier to find replacement parts.

I don't know anything about 3D studio max, but it should be plenty of machine for everything else you're wanting to do.

I'm pretty sure that all of Ben's movies were made on computers far inferior to that one.
