The server admins have the power to block certain applications from loading. Like Firefox didn't work on most of the Apples for a long time, then it was blocked on all computers after the proxy issue.

It not very smart in this kind of thing but cant they make all the internet run through proxy servers and block pages that way, and make it so apps like firefox can connect anyways ?

Somehow Firefox was still able to access the proxy site, even though it was blocked by the schools proxy.

i remember when everybody at our school downloaded enemy territory and halo to play at school. Neither game could connect to outside servers, but we could play locally so it was cool to pwn classmate noobs. (cant believe i just said that)

Well I found this awhile back in the summer but nod32 says its a virus but the comments on the torrent said it was not

I'm sure I could have bypassed the proxy at my school by modifying it, to find out the location of your proxy, just import the connection setting from IE into Portable Firefox.
