good NES controllers

I've noticed that many emulators have modes that allow more than eight sprites to appear on the screen at the same time. This eliminates flicker. Can this be done with the actual console? (Or is it in the game code?)

Also, anybody know where I can get good quality NES controllers. I only have one decent one. The rest have been thumb-smashed to death.

The flicker thing was a limitation of the original NES hardware I believe, so it can be remedied in an emulator, but not on the system itself.

Regarding NES controllers, it's really hit-or-miss. I got two controllers on eBay (together) and they were both practically new (non-destroyed dpad). The one that came with my NES however, was mutilated (or loved to death, take your pick).

I knew it was a long shot with the hardware flicker thing.

Speaking of the controllers, though, I'm in the same boat. I have three controllers and only one is good.

However, I was speaking of new controllers. Are there any 3rd party controllers that are good quality? I know about the wireless ones from playmessiah, but I don't want wireless ones. I wish they sold their wired ones separately from their systems.

I don't want laggy controllers either. That's my main concern. I've bought various third party wired controllers for various systems and had lag with them. Weird, eh?

the thumb smashiness is caused by the rubber under the buttons being worn
if you unscrew the controller, you can replace the rubber pieces with ones from other controllers like playstation controllers... I used the rubber pieces from a Super Joy III i took apart to fix up one of my NES controllers

Although why would you use a 3rd party controller on the original system? You might as well use an emulator and buy a USB controller.

Well it's a long shot. But in theory you could disable the flicker by putting the nes ppu on an fpga. Not an easy task though. (if you don't have experience with these things)

Yeah... not worth destroying an NES for something that might work, maybe. Besides, I've got too many in-theory side projects as it is. Thanks for the hint, though.

I actually managed to get my hands on a BOXED, never before played, NES controller! ($5) It was in a 2 controller box set, but there was only the 1 controller , so I imagine theres not much value to it. IT IS SO SHINY!!! Beautiful! But anyways, that was bought at a used game store, I'd reccomend a look around those stores first. Pawn Shops are also good places to find plenty to root through.

It's essentially a never-used NES controller.

Or if you live in San Jose, "Gamers in control" sells used controllers for 2.99 a pop, and they've got a ton of them. Your mileage may vary.
