It could be any of a number of problems.

What are the jumper settings?
How is the IDE cable plugged in?
Is it on its own IDE bus or is the bus shared with another device?
If it's shared, does the other device operate normally?

Is the version of Windows Home?
Have you check the device manager to see if it's enabled?

IDE cables look like this:

Code: Select all

1===2==========3
Device 1 should be master, device 2 should be slave, and 3 should go to the motherboard. (Better yet use 80 conductor ribbon cable and set everything to Cable Select.)

Is your other device set to slave too?
Does the drive work in another machine?
