Need Help ASAP

Post by ghosstt »

i have a linksys wireless router WRT54GS. For some reason, the computer that is hard wired to the router gets kicked off 1-2 times a day. Im thinking maybe the router is changing IP addresses or something, and the PC isnt getting it.. Im running WPA TKIP type.

When you say that it gets kicked off, does it automatically reconnect after a period of time? If not, what do you have to do to reset it?

Do the computers connected wirelessly also lose connection?

When the computer(s) are booted, can they still see the router immediately after, or do they not even find the router?

Who is your ISP?

Is the router set up to do DHCP on the wired and wireless? Is your computer set up to do DHCP? It could be one of them is trying to renew a DHCP lease ans the other doesn't want to.

I have the same router and it used to do that when I had Vista installed. I noticed when I went back to XP that it never disconnected me anymore.

Yeah I had the same issue, just change Vista to XP and XP to Ubuntu.

The exact issue I suffered was that between 10:30am and 1:00pm I would loose internet connection. I'd have to reset my modem and router, and majority of the time it worked. It might have been the same problem, it could have been Comcast just sucked.

Don't bother with Windows network repair, it's useless most of the time. What would be better is try just disconnecting your ethernet cable for a few seconds, then plug it back in. This will make Windows reestablish a new connection so you don't have to do that repair business.

Definitely sounds like a DHCP lease problem. I ask again, how are your computer and the router set up to get and give IP addresses?

For your PC (this is assuming Windows XP):
Right-click on My Network Places and select Properties.
On the window that pops up, right-click on Local Area Connection and select Properties.
On the window that pops up, scrol down in the list until you see Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
Double-click on that and tell us what it says.

For your router:
Log into the router.
The settings for every router are different, I suggest you find the manual for your router and look up how to log in and configure it.

If you don't know how to login to the router, follow these steps:
Go to Start, then Run, then type in "cmd" (no quotes) and hit enter.
At the command prompt type in "ipconfig /all" (no quotes) and hit enter.
Find the section titled Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection or something similar.
In that section there will be a Default Gateway followed by an IP address.
Open up a web browser and type that IP address into your address bar and hit enter.
This should bring you to your router's login screen. I can't tell you what the login is, but if you haven't changed it it's usually:
Username:
(Yes, I mean blank.)
Password: admin
(Other possibilities include password and linksys.)
