HUGE Temp files, please help!

I'm cleaning out my harddrive right now, and I'm really trying to get rid of a lot of stuff. I didn't think I had too many large files on C because all my videos and My Documents are all on another harddrive. I had no idea what was filing this harddrive so much that every month I get down to about 100 megabytes. Yes 100 MEGABYTES.

Well, I found the problem

C:\Documents and Settings\(User Name)\Local Settings\Temp

I ordered the files in this folder by size and selected the last few rows.


29.6GB. Actually, way more than that, thats just 55 out of the over 7,000 files in the folder.

Is it safe to delete these? They all say "Photoshop Temp(Random numbers here)" so I'm assuming they have to do with Photoshop, but what the heck are they!? They're not pictures, they're not program files, and they're taking up half my harddrive!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It's there for a reason I don't know, but I delete everything inside my Temp file all the time with no problems (that I notice anyways)

I guess delete everything inside the folder and not the folder itself. Anything that was "useful" will go back whne you use whatever program it was from

ok you can delete everything in or go to hard drive clean up thing and clean the temp folders

I read that some files are safe to delete, and others aren't. Is this true? 15GB of the files in there I confirmed are safe to delete, the other 15GB of Photoshoptemp files... I'm not sure. I go to Google, and some of the links say yes, others say no.

These files are literally taking up half my harddrive. HALF.

Make sure you close all programs, and then Shift-Delete everything in the temp folder. (You don't want it to go to the recycle bin).

Also, try running Disk Cleanup (right-click your hardrive and click properties)
Change the tab to "More Options." Click the bottom button; "Delete all but the most recent System Restore point." This freed up a couple gigs the first time I did it.

Also, download CCleaner (google it)

If it's in the temp folder, it's 99.9% okay to delete it, unless it's in use- in which case, it will refuse to delete it. I will not say it is always okay to delete it, as there might be that one really odd case out there.

Well I did it, and it worked (except for the open file, like you said) and I freed up 30GB!

But now Photoshop is really slow... I'm sure it wasn't the temp files, my computer likes to take a crap sometimes, and just totally screw up.

Install and run CCleaner, it's only about 2 megs installed. (Download the slim version or else you're getting the Yahoo toolbar as well.) Let it do its thing and it should delete everything that's safely deletable. If you don't want to install it there's a portable version too.

Thats pretty strange. out of curiosity I checked my temp folder and the biggest file was 6.03 megs.

Of course, most every application uses the Temp folder. How big are the files that are being created? Not the original 30GB I hope...

Well the one that came back was over 1GB. It's not a whole lot, but that's minutes after deleting the rest.

you see all your movie files are on a difrent hd BUT they still the same temp folder

Check what your video editing software is using as scratch disks (places to store temporary files). That could be it.
