As silly as it is I like the idea from Thailand. Making the police responsible, even if it's just a little bit of humiliation is better then what a lot of police get when the break the law, typically nothing.

I'd love to see something like that enacted here. All to often I see a police cruiser pulling 40+ when the speed limit is 35. I see them turn there lights on of an instant so they can go through a red light. I hate that they have an acceptation to the rules, when really they should be held to a higher standard because they have the power and authority.

Using bullets to dislodge the snake seems very lacking in forethought on the officers part, why not just take the time to get a shotgun with the proper shells for the purpose?

Really, they should have gotten someone out there who knew what he was doing.

If the snake is in a tree, then they must have been discharging weapons into the air. That's almost universally a terrible idea. Even a shotgun would be dangerous in that situation.

I don't recall the article identifying the snake, but I'd be willing to put money down that it was not venomous.

I'm wondering why the cops thought it would be a great idea not to call in some kind of animal control, but instead shoot guns into a tree. I mean, honestly, it can't be easy to shoot a snake with a pistol or rifle, and as far as a shotgun goes, I can't see that being terribly effective unless the scatter is pretty close together (depends on the distance they were shooting, I suppose).

Shotgun would be the best firearm for the situation (though still not the best solution), the shot becomes non-lethal in a comparatively short distance (when I went shotgun shooting last year we had to have a 600yd firing range) to other guns and the individual pieces of shot would be less deadly when falling back down.
The shot from a shotgun doesn't actually spread as fast as most people think. You aren't going to blow away 5 guys at once from 10 feet away like in movies. Most likely, by the time its spread enough that it would hit the 5 guys, it would have lost its power. Our 20 gauge shotgun (unsure of the choke and other factors) from about 50 feet has about an 8 inch wide spray, and with bird shot there wasn't a square inch of that that wasn't touched. So if we assume the average park tree is 50 feet tall, it would have been well within range of being hit.
Of course there are much better ways to have killed or removed the snake (if it was harmful at all), but when choosing to do it with a gun, a pistol is a poor choice when most squad cars have a shotgun in the trunk.

Hm, wonder what would happen if you called in about a cat being stuck in a tree. Seems kinda unrealistic to bring in a firetruck and use that, I'd just say "screw you, get a smarter cat" if I were the dispatcher. On Wikipedia I read that they can fall from pretty much any height and sustain little to no injury, but I can't find it again. So if thats true, just climb the tree and shove it out.
