Because it's awesome!!! And probably one of the easiest Linux's available...

So the real question is: Why Not!!!1!

I'm sorry but there are only a few reasons to run Linux on a home desktop PC:

1. Development

2. Running a file or sandbox web server

3. It's a really old machine and all you want is word processing, web browsing, and email

4. To say you aren't running Windows

Honestly, it's not worth it unless you really know what you're doing. Linux is composed of hundreds of little half-hearted tools with old inside jokes for names, archaic commands, a completely foreign directory structure, and if one piece of software is broken or missing, and entire chunk of the system goes down.

It's no wonder corporations don't want to touch the stuff. I'm in a class learning the ins and outs of the system, and even though we're all running identical installations of the system on identical computers there's still problems that vary between installations. (Mostly broken drivers, X suddenly dying, terminal utilities downloaded through the GUI updater killing the entire OS...) Honestly, after working with it for months, I can tell you it's a lot more trouble than it's worth. If you can get it to work, good for you, but I'm not sold.

If Windows does what you want, don't bother with Linux.

Isn't really a answer.

One reason is just to try it out and see what all the buzz is about.

If you just want to try it out, thats the reason why they made live CDs. No risk of hurting you're existing stuff.

Just partition it to a separate hard drive. That's what I did.

(Even though for some reason I cant run Ubuntu I have to run Xubuntu)

I'd blame it on the slow server because I had time to post in between...

Bicostp, Linux doesn't break as easily as Windows, and the utilities and programs are not half-hearted. Many are well programed and have been in containt refinement for years.

Corperations are moving to Linux. It's cheap, it's easy to program on and it's open source. All three are things that seem to be a corperate fade now a days.

The system structure is not messed up, it's logical. Sorry to say this but it's Windows that is messed up. It's too chaotic and to limited in what you can add. Not to mention that whole alphabet deal with the drives only leads to screwing something up when you have playlists or programs that are keyed to that drive letter.

Another thing about the system structure, if it's so messed up why is it use by BSD, the best server platform under the sun, and Mac OS? Again it works.

I will agree on the topic that there isn't much reason to be running Ubuntu or any version of Linux on a home computer. There is nothing out there that would make a Linux distribution better then XP, save for lower end hardware.

Key advantage that Ubuntu really has at the moment over XP is that as a basic computer for simple office, web browsing and other simple stuff, it's cheaper (free). You can't beat the price that Ubuntu has over XP.

That still doesn't explain why a completely stock OptiPlex 745 with 1 gig of RAM and an 80 gig hard drive runs OpenSuse 10 just fine, but a completely stock OptiPlex 745 with 1 gig of RAM and an 80 gig hard drive refuses to run X.

I never said the directory structure is "messed up", I said it's foreign if you're used to drive letters and the registry. I admit when I first sat down with it (Ubuntu 5 I think), the structure seemed pretty random. And in all honestly I'm still not sure what it does with everything.
