solaris 10 OS

does anyone else use this thing? My friend told me about it and it came in the mail today. I'd use it but my very Ghetto computer does not have a DVD drive and it has a 6 gig HDD. the OS takes 10 gigs.

its supposed to be the "Most advanced" OS in the world. what do you think?

also, My mom said I can install it on her PC as long as she can still use her windows files and the such. im sure I can, am I right?

Good luck finding precompiled software that will run on it. (Besides Java apps.)

If Windows does what you want, don't bother potentially erasing everything just to play with another system.

As long as you partition the Hard Drive you will be fine.

That's what i'll probably do. and another random question: is solaris linux?

Solaris is a nice OS, but I don't think it would be the most advanced. Reason being that Solaris is kind of behind as far as modern package management is concerned. I might be wrong as it's been quite awhile scene I looked in on it, but at the time it's software installation was more like the Ports system that *BSD uses.

I would also say that as Solaris is not a mainstream OS, don't plan on using it for a desktop unless you're looking to invest a lot of time into it. Reason being that it lacks a lot of drivers, so you might have to develop or co-develop drivers for any hardware you have. It's also going to lack a lot of the functionality that Window, Mac OS, and to a lesser extent many linux distributions have.

I've run a server OS on my computer before (Server 2003 and PC-BSD), it's not something to go nuts over. What you gain is really networking power over user functionality, and in the case of Server 2003 I lost to ability to use my external hard drive (no FAT32 read-access).
