Homemade Laptop/Warcraft 3 (2 topics for the space of one!)

Post by Kurt_ »

I figure the laptop will be hard. Is it as simple as connecting everything?

Ex.
- I get a Laptop motherboard, Laptop HDD, Laptop graphics card, etc.
- I then proceed to connect all the connections that aren't connected.
- I end up with the guts of a fully-functional laptop.

Tell me why this won't work.

Warcraft 3: Who plays? I do, and I stick to customs because I suck. I bring this up because I saw ShadeSlayer101 online today, and he would not answer if he was from here or not.
I play only Customs on The Frozen Throne. My Name is ChatMaster.Kurt (From Battletanks ending ranks. I talk a lot.)
I'm currently trying to get into DotA. I enjoy TD Games (who doesn't), Tag games, Mad Balls Arena (fun new game), etc.

Who plays customs too? Username?

The only thing you have to worry about is compatibility, though it shouldn't really be a problem, as most laptops are just the motherboard, I think you'd have to get a high-end one for a graphics card. Laptop memory is like desktop memory, you just have to know what you need. Laptop HDDs are the same as desktops, any one should work.
What exactly do you plan on doing?

Nothing soon. But if it's cheaper, in the future (a year or so) I'll assemble a laptop vs. buy one. Especially if the option is buying it new, as I'll save hundreds not having to get a preloaded vista one.

Oh, in that case, you'll likely be better off buying a pre-built one, ebay is about the only place I know of for parts. The parts will likely be more expensive, like buying a car vs. buying the individual parts from the dealer.

the parts are indeed much more expensive than the whole. probably because the only source of laptop parts is broken laptops.

also 99% of laptops have integrated graphics, sound and network. on top of that, most of then non-integrated parts are completely proprietary (LCD, keyboard, speakers), which means you have to buy the right ones. You wouldn't end up with a 'custom' laptop, rather a more expensive replica of some existing model.

Unless you're going to buy a small mobo and a small lcd screen to use this will be expensive. Just about everything with laptops are proprietary. Just buy a used one on ebay for cheap use it.

You could get an OEM barebone laptop, like an Asus S96J, or a Compel. You end up with the laptop case + motherboard + LCD, basically anything you can't remove from a laptop. It's up to you to choose CPU, Ram, and Hdd.

My S96J even came with a fresh little "Void if sticker borken" sticker :P

You'll end up saving some money this way, depending on what components you choose.
