Build a server

This is more of a price check than anything. I was thinking making my own server. Unfortunately I heard that doing so may cost me money (probably just a rumor). So lets see how low you can go. In the end all you will need is a motherboard (if possible with AGP 4x or 8x), processor, ram, case and maybe a hard drive.

I am willing to reuse my old dvd-rw drive, power supply (420 watts), 80 gig hard drive, Video Card (hence the agp).

Oh, and the case can be the ugly, it just has to work.

Beer cases work fine, as ben found out ages ago.

If you just want a sandbox server to mess around with web stuff on, and your computer has more than 512 MB of RAM, run Virtual PC 2007. It's free and it works.

If you want to host a website for the world to see, you're better off with a hosting service. It will be faster and have more uptime.

Why does the graphics system matter? Servers generally run headless with no GUI anyway, so integrated graphics are more than enough. Check Tiger Direct, they've got some cheap Sempron/Celeron D motherboard bundles for under $100.

The graphics system matters because then if i don't need a server i can also use it for other things.
