I would suggest checking out http://doom9.net. They have guilds and a download section that will have all of what you want or need.

Any strait forward free DVD 2 AVi?
Say I wanted to put a avi file of my Hitch Hickers Guide to the Galaxy DVD and put it on my Jornada 540.
Or is the free way the complicated way?

Its not that hard. This will tell you how to use DVD Decrypter, and use the product of that in Mediacoder.

By the way, AVI is only a container format. You need to figure out what codecs your Joranda's system has (XviD, some sort of MPEG-4, or [diety] help you Microsoft Video Codec).

Just use Decrypter and Mediacoder. Generally, specially-made "X to Y" programs are garbage.

Agree with handbrake. Quick, easy and straightforward. Only does one pass, but that shouldn't matter too much.

EDIT: It can do 2 passes, my mistake. Thanks, Felino.

Heh, I'll have to check that out when I get home (Wednesday night). If it can do two passes, then that will help me out with my master plan (don't ask).

Sompy video encoder, from DVD(or any other video format) to AVI even better (depending on settings it can turn a 1gb file into about 50mb. There is one problem though the progress bar does not show anything but a box comes up at the end telling you its finished and best all its free!

[off topic]also great for pdas its the best I have used and the only one which works The Core Pocket Media Player link here and click on 0.72RC1[off topic/]

edit: just saw that you said that you wanted to put it on a pda it works great on my Jornada 560 even on full screen (through tcpmp)

50mb at what quality. Me? I only do video_ts rips, except for my ipod, and libretto, which handbrake does fine. :D Provided you use the right settings the ipod can get a little picky at times.

I noticed. Thanks. I wasn't at home before, but now I am, tested it, and that noticeably increased quality (as it should).
