I was wondering what batteries i could use for my portable Super nes / Fc-Twin. then a fellow employee of mine said "hey! what about a psp battery?". which got me thinking. then i looked on ebay to find that a 3600mah battery is available. so if im figuring this out right, 2X of those set in series would come up with a battery pack worth $20, be 3600mah, be 7.2 volts, and would be really, really light. but theres gotta be some kind of catch? Right? Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
PSP batteries? Would they work?

Sounds alright to me. The catch is charging them. You gotta spend another $20 on a special Lithium Ion charger that won't make the batteries explode. If you can crack one open and look for a protection circuit that would be awesome. If it has one (which is likely to be the case), that is the only catch.
Hey, sup?
I cracked them open.
turns out there is a chip on the back of them and i did a voltage test on them and they seem to be working out good. and as for the charging unit, i bought them off ebay and they came each with a charger that you plug directly into the wall. but, i was going to use 2 batteries in series so i wonder how i can adapt the charger to charge both at the same time.

Well one will probably output 3.7V, which is wrong. To charge them, (this isn't the only way, just the one off the top of my head), I would add a switch to cut off the batteries from the rest of portable, and hooks up the batteries in parallel.
If enough current is outputted (2000mA) it will charge at full speed. Otherwise it'll charge slowly.

Hey, sup?
Charging lithium batteries in parallel is bad, though, isn't it? I think it would be best if you had it so that a switch disconnected the batteries from the portable and each other, and plug them each in to their own charger (while they're still in the portable). But then you still have to worry about over discharging them, the protection circuits should keep them from exploding, but won't keep them from dying.Kurt_ wrote:Well one will probably output 3.7V, which is wrong. Ah, I didn't think of that, it'd die before they got to dangerous levels. That makes it a lot safer (as long as you turn if off when the screen dies).Kurt_ wrote:Some do. And if you're running with a PS1 screen, 6 volts would be way too low to run, and that's when the batteries are at their minimum.
