Despite being on Cable News there actually seems to be some truth to this:

Of course, all you need to do to disable it effectively is open your handset, snip one of the wires running to the mic, and then solder the to snipped ends to a switch or button. (and of course do a cool case mod to intergrate the switch into the phone.)
