PS3 Price Drop to be Short Lived

Post by jones »

Just stumbled across this. Looks like if you want to get a $500 PS3 you better get it soon, because it isn't around to stay.
[UPDATE] Following a flurry of confusion, the matter was apparently settled by none other than Sony Computer Entertainment's president and CEO. Speaking to Norwegian game-news outlet VGTV, Kaz Hirai said in no uncertain terms that the 60GB version is being phased out.

"From a hardware perspective, the $499 price adjustment we did for the 60GB version for the American market, we're no longer in production for that product," he said in an on-camera interview. "Once that product is gone from the retailer shelves, then we're back to a $599 SKU only, so it's not like we have a two-price strategy in the US market. We found out very early on how consumers react to having just one SKU as opposed to two."

The PS3 is quickly becoming a joke. And what's left on it - FF13?

I guess the scuttlebutt is that the new 80 gig model (whoo, 20 more gigs, who cares?) doesn't have the PS2 hardware inside (the combo EM+GS chip and RAM) and instead does emulation ala the 360, thus Sony will make more money per unit. Which is why they want to unload the 60 gig'ers.

Now let's all bet on if Jones picks one up before they're all gone ;)

Nah. I don't need a Blu-ray player just yet and the lack of Gran Turismo 5 gives me less than no reason to buy one. So someone else can snag the one that has my name on it thanks.

I believe the 80 gig one hasn't been anounced for europe yet and thus they won't be unloading the 60's yet...... (I'm expecting them to do so though if it becomes a succes in america, mmmmmm looks like europe wil never see 80 gig ones  )

I decided a while ago, "copulate CONSOLES I AM STICKING WITH MY COMPUTER!"

My Nvidia 8800 dose it just as good as any PS3 or whatever, and my mouse and keyboard owns any silly Wii-mote.

If what Ben mentioned is true, about Sony making more money off of the 80GB model, then this question comes to mind: what makes Sony think that people will even buy the 80GB model? The people who really want one either already have one, or will go get one now that they're $500. The people on the fence may decide to get one now because of the limited price cut. But once the supply for the 60GB is gone, the remaider of people who didn't get one won't be saying, "Oh, I'll just get the one that costs $100 more and comes with a game that I don't really want." They'll say, "Screw this crap," and put their money elsewhere.

This is such a stupid way for Sony to boost sales. "Quick! Get your PS3 now because the $500 price tag won't last!" Once the 60GB model is gone and all that's left is the $600 version, Sony will start to benefit more from software sales, but their hardware sales are going to come to an abrupt stop.

Which leads to my next question: how long do you think it will be before the 80GB model gets a price drop?

I'm just kinda shocked though now...because I mean the PS3 might take the 3DO route or something. It's losing all of the exclusives, and I think all it has now is MGS4 and FF13, but both of those might be gone. I'm also shocked that Katamari and (recently) DMC4 is going to 360. PS3's looking to be a paperweight.

Speaking of paperweight.... what the hell happened to the 20GB version? I think now they're going for $400 (Japanese version though) on ebay. Which to me is a steal as long as you don't plan on watching DVDs or Playing USA PS1 and PS2 games...

Other than that. Region Free Games. And it'll play USA Blu-ray as well as Japanese.

So it wins as a cheap $400 Blu-ray solution as well as a PS3(only) game player.

'Becoming' implies that it wasn't already a joke :P

Also, I just realised that I am approaching my third anniversary on these forums, and I have yet to build a portable myself :o

Good job!

I for some reason wanted a PS3 until I heard this. I mean, MGS4 looks great but I was never a big MGS fan. Plus I can get everything on the 360 that I can on the PS3 ( that I want at least).

Give it time, it will appear on the 360 along with everything else.

You'd think Sony would learn something from the 2400% increase in sales with the price drop. Nope.

Hey Jedi Knight.....MEGADETH RULES.

And Ben, I'm not by any means a PS3 enthusiast, but you are forgetting a some more titles including but not limited to: Killzone 2 (I know the first one was a let down but give it a chance, plus it looks great), MGS 4, Unreal Tournament, Little Big Planet (which looks really cool BTW), Heavenly Sword, GT5, Haze (I think). Still, I agree that PS3 is heading down the crapper and the 360 does offer awesome games (Halo 3, Mass Effect, Fable 2, Bioshock, aww crap I'm going to be broke for a long time.)

Well, I would stick with PCs if it hadn't been for the lack of any hardware standered. All the games developed for the computer are usually based on graphics and sound cards that only came out a month or two before, and a month or two later the new games require graphics and sound cards that are a little bit better. A game console is a solid investment because you are garunteed software for up to seven years after the system launches.
