how to rip burnt music CDs to an XBOX

First off, What I'm doing is legal so keep it legal and we're cool. I don't intend to use this for illegal stuff like copied games. Anyway...

I'm buying my friend's xbox tommarow and plan on getting GTA SA for it because it has a custom radio station for my face melting heavy metal, unlike the PS2 version which has crap rap.

The problem is that my music is all (legal) MP3s on my computer, not CDs. Xbox can't read burnt CDs so i need to find a way to get my music onto the hard drive.

I heard that temporarily replacing the xbox DVD drive with a normal drive allows it to read burnt CDs as long as I'm not trying to play a game. Would that be sufficient to rip burnt music CDs to the hard drive? Would it cause any problems that would prevent my xbox from working after I put the normal drive back in?

If not, I might have to resort to a modchip. Do all modchips allow burnt CDs, even though they usually don't list that as one of the features on most websites that have them?

I've played burnt CDs on my Xbox, no mods. The Xbox in its normal state can't play mp3's, so when you burn the CD, try making it an audio CD (the one that can only hold ~80 minutes). It worked for me, but I also have a Samsung drive (the best one, can read almost anything).

I tried some burnt audio CDs and a non-burnt audio CD and only the non-burnt one works

. Then I found out what xbox revision it is and it's a version 1.6 (doh!) with a samsung drive. According to the prophecies, this drive is supposed to be the best with the most compatability, however, another version of the samsung came out later with less compatability. Since my Xbox is from 11/20/04, I probably got the later version of the drive. Is there any hope?

xbox has a lot of different drive styles--most intentionally designed not to work with certain types of disks. I've yet to see a drive on that system that works with everything.

I actually have the same revision you do--the 1.6 that can't do cdrs. it also can only do one of the dvdr formats.

One thing you could do is try burning your music to CDRW's as an audio cd. they tend to have a much better chance of reading rw's.

if that doesn't work, it gets a little messy. And if your box isn't modded, REAL messy. xbox rips the music as wma files. So rip any regular cd, and find where it's at on the HD (it will be deep in, but I can't recall exactly where). note the number of tracks you're ripping and look for the folder with that number of wmas.
now on your computer, convert your mp3's to wma's with the same names, and replace the files on the xbox with them. xbox-scene probably has more detailed instructions as to where to find the xbox's WMAs. If you browse you will find them pretty quickly.

I got sick of doing plan b up there after about 10 songs. if anybody knows of an app on xbox that takes DVD's full of mp3/wmas and converts/moves them to the right places, I could really use one of those.

I have 1 CD-RW. Does anybody know of a free CD-RW blanker? Or is there one built into XP?

The free version of DeepBurner will blank out a RW. (It's a great tool; I use it for burning almost everything.)

now I've got to try it--I actually never have. I just recalled that all xboxes could read them which is why they're used when flashing, but I kind of expected M$ had some kind of extra protection on their ripping software by rev1.6.

that's *much* easier than the 'other way'
