PS2 portable!!

yeah, I got my new ps2 in today. I opened it up right away and checked it out. It's a V5 MB. It would have been nicer if it was a V4, but it might use less power. I'll be working on this for the rest of the weekend...

Say just a question whats your opinion on the v.1 or v.2 mobo. I have a PS2 (really old one) and as I'm not doing anything with it really I thought I'd see if its a project possible/worth doing in the future.

And before closing. Besides that set back it sounds like your PS2p isnt far off from being finished.

i was wondering on it too what will the case look like and what size screen are you going to use?

I haven't seen the insides of the v1 or v2 ps2s, but I've seen the insides of v3, v4, and v5, and in my opinion, v3 and v4 are the best to portabalize. That's only because I've worked a lot with the v4 ps2, and that the v3 ps2 can be made quite smaller since it has many seperate boards inside.
It ends up that the ps2 I got a few weeks ago is no good for working with for me, so I'm still looking for a good v4 mb. I suppose that I could design a case and everything, but I'm not sure what screen I'll be using. I think that I'm going to use a ps1 screen, but I might try finding a 7.2" screen, or maybe a widescreen. It might actually be easier for me to find a 12V screen since I wouldn't have to build a flop circuit, although I supose I could always get a dc-dc converter to use instead.

yeah, and if that's to scale, it'd be around 30" wide :p
I might work on a case design soon, I've already mapped my V4 mb in my CAD program, but I still am not quite sure about what screen I want to use.

With the case design I always thought the hardest part would be where to put the heat-sink so you can keep it cool and not burn yourself (if it gets that hot).

Now as for cennar's comment, exactly what is hoorable game play? To may reclolection if a game sucks its the fault of the maker/producter of the game no the company that made the system.
But I wount argue that the shape of the PS2 leaves something to be desired cough*crativity*cough

Well you cant expect a lot of crativity from a company that make an OS that crashes, few inovative games, and the gaming system is really just a computer. The fact it suck is proved but the people that made custom cases.

And Gannon do you have all the hardware down (save for the case) with you PS2p? I'd like to know how you did it, a I found I have a v3 and as all it doing is collecting dust I'll portablize it.

Yeah, If I want to relocate the laser I'm going to need a better soldering tip though. The wires on it are less than a mm apart

Also, the one thing I've been contemplating about is the 2 controller ports. Like it or not, the controller ports and memory card slot board is big
So big infact I think I might just desolder it and cut it down to only the memory card slots. Either that or I might make it protrude slightly from the bottom, or where ever I decide to put it.
Anyways, I suppose I have most of the hardware done except the case, and the fact that I still need a new v4 mb. It isn't too high on my list of things to do right now since I want to power it off li-poly cells, and they are cost even more than a new ps2.
Also, you might want to contact poppe. He had already been doing a ps2p until his v3 broke. He has some good pictures on his site too.

I just opened up my ps2 controller and I find it kind of strange. It has a single pcb and then all the buttons are on a thin film sheet. I'm sure I can cut it in half to spread it apart, but I'm going to have to keep the button film since I'm pretty sure that the tactile switches wouldn't alow pressure sensitivity.

Well or look for an off brand like you have for you N64 project, the third pardy manufatures tend to dumb down on the technology where ever possible.
I've used an off brand PSX (when it was called that) controller and the feel and control was way different.

At worst your down what ~$5-10 if you buy used, ofcorse.

I finally opened up the other end of the ps2 controller and found the pinout for it. I'm not sure if it's the same for a ps1 controller, but it probably is pretty similar.
