Yay, I found an N64 I'm going to buy...(just because it comes with a 3rd party controller, and perfect dark...)

UPDATE!
I got my N64 in the mail, and before I got addicted to Perfect Dark, I managed to take apart the controller and it does have a potentiometer in it!

in other new, I have to go camping for a week starting Saturday. so I can't doo anything(unless if I brought a soldering iron, but the camp directors wouldn't be too happy with that.

)

the case has been vac formed, I have a dc to dc converter, I have controller pieces dremeled, I have a game cube joy stick to replace the N64 one ,etc.
I have a lot of things done, but in my portables, I like to finish the case befor I do the wiring ...

Interested in the GameCube joystick part - I know there are forum posts on this, but not a great deal of detail, so please elaborate what you do with this part of the mid WITH PICTURES please when you do it so it is well documented.

yeah, that post is good, but basically, you get a third party controller that uses potentimeters, and hook up the gamecube one to the third party controller board. easy to do, and makes the thing last longer

edit: my case came today!!!!!!!!!!! I'll post a pic soon

Yes, that's my impression of how to hook up the GC joystick. 6 wires in total, presumably you just swap like for like.

The joystick in the third party controller I will be using in my project is the type you refer to; my view is it depends on the end size of your case. If your case ends up being slightly tall then the smaller joystick you get in the controller I will use will be fine (see my topic), if not, I will use a GameCube one. Too early to tell which I will use yet, won't know until I am designing the case when everything is laid out and completed. You are guaranteed to have everything working perfectly by using the joystick it came with!

Great to see an update with some pics

Where is the joystick going? I presume the button on the right at the bottom is the "start" button. If you mount the joystick below the D-pad, isn't that going to be more awkward to use??

If he puts it directly below, then yes it would be akward to use. But If he put it under and a little to the right (i.e.play station) it wouldnt be akward.

My thoughts are that primary use is via the joystick, there isn't much you use the D-pad for, if at all, so the joystick has to be in a comfortable position as priority, and also in a suitable position so you can reach the left shoulder and Z button. The D-pad would therefore go in a place which is usable but not in prime place. I would have thought moving the joystick a little over to the right of the current D-pad position would be best, with the D-pad under it. The other issue then is having the speakers in a symetrical position; if you use tiny speakers, not a problem, but becomes an issue with larger ones - the positioning of the contollers, buttons and speakers can greatly alter how professional the end product looks.

Whatever works for you, go for it.
