Windows Method: Boot from the Windows Install Disk, and get to the step where it asks you where you want to install it. You can delete the partition from there and just exit the installer and everything is fine. I'm not sure but I think it can combine partitions too.

Right-click "My Computer" (not a shortcut) and click manage. Then "storage" and "disk management". You then delete the partition (make sure its the right one, it'll likely say its an unknown file system). Then you can format it to FAT32 or NTFS so you can use it in Windows.

1. no idea

2. I believe you have to put your install disc in, do "repair" and type "fixmbr" in the command prompt that comes up. I'm 99% sure thats right, can anyone confirm?

1. As far as I know you can't. You may be able to use some live CD to dynamically resize the partition but as far as I know that's risky with NTFS.

2. Right. Put the Windows install disc in (or download the XP disk set from bootdisk.com) and load up the recovery console. At the prompt, type "fixmbr" without the quotes and it should fix it. However, if the boot loader is grub and it lets you pick Windows, edit the config file to select Windows by default. It's a workaround but there's less chance of screwing things up.

@ghosstt: If you're happy with Windows, no. The only reasons to run Linux on your desktop is to say you aren't running Windows, and to breathe life into an old computer. Linux, as far as I'm concerned, is too much of a hassle to keep running. Windows just works. (I don't know about you but I have better things to do than spend three hours figuring out why some random program won't compile properly.)

Linux is only useful if you want to run a home server or want to tinker with a computer. (Tinkering with a system is fun, but not when it's your primary computer.)

Ok, first what you want to do is get Acronis Disk Director or Partition Magic (both of those are on Hiren's Boot CD along with other useful tools. I am not telling where to get it) and boot up to it. You delete the Linux partition and resize the Windows partition to fill the hard drive. Next, you boot up your Windows XP Professional install CD, and press R when it asks, to go the the recovery console. You type "fixmbr" (no quotes), and bang your mbr is restored and grub/lilo/whatever boot loader you installed is gone!
