I'm not saying quit, I'm saying its highly improbable you'll succeed.
Think on the mighty Spartans, it was highly improbable that they'd succeed, and they didn't, but they still inspired legions of /b/tards.

Dont get me wrong, I would love to make this, I mean just the mini ITX parts would cost 500$; and that's without batteries or a screen.

Plus HP has a Dual core AMD Laptop running vista for 499$.

it's just not worth it...

Comparable to portablizing anything. How much does it cost to make a decent portable? A lot. I spent like 215USD on a PSP and 4GB memory stick, plays everything I could want and more.
For the average person, portablizing of any sort, whether it be consoles or PCs, just isn't worth it.

Well not necessarily, a PS1p would still probably be better than a PSP; mostly because the PS1 is mostly a better system.

On the other hand, my homemade laptop would have a 1 Ghz processor, while the cheaper HP has 1.7 Ghz. It's the other way around.

Eh? I carry one of these incredibly light things round with me every day with my laptop, i mean the runtime is awsome, and if you need cooking, short it out!

Everyone should try these with ther laptop, cool as!

or, maybe not, the only thing i use sla batteries for is camping and the like.

i have plans for a mini laptop, already bought an appropriate lcd, the motherboard i would use runs average around 50$ when they crop up on ebay. not counting batteries would cost me under 175$ to build and be appx 8.5x6x2 inches closed. 6.5" 1024x768 res lcd! would be 300mhz 128mb ram 4gb microdrive built in usb wifi with antenna, dvd drive(already have it) etc. the batteries alone would basically a little more than double my price! 150$ for the two 3.7v 10ah Lipoly cells plus however much a protection circuit cost.

if you are going to buy a laptop i would suggest that you get amd with vista ready becuase amd is taking over the market and its cheeper and if its vista ready they usually have a lot of ram and a good cpu speed. Also look on ebay i got a 1.6p4 with 512mb ram with built in wireless G good battery and a 60gb hd for $195 shipped. not the best laptop but gets the job done.

yep because the motherboard runs on 5v only with provision for 12v for lcd backlight because it has lvds output. i was planning on LED modding the lcd so it wouldnt be used

If you're looking for an efficient 5v regulator, try some cell phone or PSP car chargers. I have a PSP one that I think works down to 5v input.

Yep. I'm not sure if all of them have it, some might have 7805's, but it was $1 at a thrift store and I needed the power connector anyways.

Which is better? Compaq or Dell?

The dell comes with Ubuntu but the Compaq come with Vista...

No, mine came with a switching regulator, I'm just not sure if all of them do, there might be some cheap ones with just a 7805 and led shoved in the case.

@ZN13: I'd personally go with the Compaq, but thats just because I dislike Dell. And if they're both the same price and similar hardware, definitely get the Compaq. Ubuntu is free, Vista isn't (unless you do the Live Search Club thing...).
