Homemade Laptop

Use a laptop hard drive. They've got more storage space and have a longer life in this application than flash memory, and they should only pull around 500mA. (Besides if you're building a laptop with desktop parts you shouldn't even bother with a battery.)

Yeah, I saw that laptop a while back on Hack a day.

Im probably not going to use desktop parts any more, but a mini ITX instead.

So are you going to battery power it? If so, be prepared to spend a tom and/or have a lot of space for them. Even mini itx use a ton of power when compared to older game systems.

I will add batteries eventually.

I was actually thinking of maybe adding a touchscreen, you know making a Tablet PC type thing; but who knows.

EDIT:Greenbatteries.com sells 20 2400 mAH AA batteries for 50$. Would that be enough to power a M10000 MoBo with a Dc-Dc converter(the one on the mini ITX site) and a 7" touchscreen(12v at 750 mAH)?

i can tell you AAs will NOT be enough, like tom said decent batteries to get you any decent run time and not weigh a thousand pounds will have to be lipoly and expect to pay 100+ for those! as for the mobo, look into single board computers or PC/104 boards on ebay, if your lucky you can get a pentium grade or faster computer thats under 6x8 inches for under 60$ plus shipping

When I set out to build a PCportable, people told me it was nearly impossible. Four ruiness attempts later, I must agree with them. Building a portable computer* is very nearly impossible, and incredibly expensive to boot.

I suggest you spend the money on a laptop, like an old Libretto or Lifebook.

*luggable, 1+ hour runtime, etc.

Would my batteries have to be LiPoly, or could I use NiMH?

Would I have to have 2 12v battery packs(one for screen and one for mobo), or could I use one 24v Pack and somehow evenly distribute the voltage?

Both run off less than 12 volts so, well, why not sue 12 volts?

EDIT: Why use either type of batteries, i am sure you could get a lot beter runtime out o some other type, try a wet acid battery? You would get up to 50 Ah out of one of those things, and i don't think they even cost that much.

Much better than 2-3 aH out of a lipoly. Just not as good for the envirnment.

What kind of batteries do you want? The ones that strap to your back or the ones that come in their own wheelbarrow?

Just forget batteries, unless you want to lug around an interruptible power supply and get 15 minutes out of a charge.

If you want portable computing, get a cheap and/or used laptop.

You do know how much those weigh, right?

Even motorcycle batteries weigh several pounds. (LEAD-acid...)
