I was looking at a recent copy of Jameco a few days ago, and I discovered this:

It's a Li-ion D CELL that is RECHARGEABLE. AND ITS RATED AT 16.5 amps!!!! No, that is not a typo. Just two of these could drive even the most gas guzzling portables (Ben's PS2P for example) for more than four hours.
At about $16.00 a piece, you could make a 7.2v pack for around $35!! That's way lighter and less expensive than a comparable NiMH pack(which uses 6 cells instead of 2).
How to charge them, you ask? Since they are lithium ion, you could hook them up to a Infolithium(L size) charger. That should theoretically work, but if anyone knows a better way, let me know.

These are the size a normal alkaline D size battery.
That's about 2 inches tall, and about 1.2 inches in diameter.
And no, you cannot use a normal NIMH charger. Lithium cells are a special case, where you have to have a computer controlled charger to monitor the internal structure. These batteries will explode if charged with a normal charger. I suggest looking into modifying a Sony Infolithium charger(or similar) that is already made for the application.
Look on Ebay for a good deal on one.

.....even if it can charge lithium batteries, it says that the maximum mah it can charge is 8000 mah.....if it can charge these batteries, though, I suppose it'd just take a bit longer....
