well, i think both are doing fairly well. Heres my idea on giving each portable its own page.

1. Lets say you want to kno about Snes portables. you go to the snes page
2. the layout is like this

-Overview
blahblahblah
-Size
blahblhablha
Current Portables <--------Â§
person 1
person 2
etc

Â§ here, well have a list that links to each persons portable snes page, that will have info about it. Easiest way IMO

Do we really need "overview" pages? Why can't we put everything in one page for each system? (Different revisions would require different pages, of course, such as "Atari_2600_(6-switch)" and "Atari_2600_(4-switch)") Separate intro pages seems kind of redundant. An intro paragraph at the top is fine, Besides, we can just send users to Wikipedia if they want to learn more about the console.

thats what i did at first, then timmeh told me to change it

EDIT: can a mod make a poll that says something like, wiki page layout. then two choices, Overiew, seperate portables page, or Overview with portables page

The Overview pages purpose is to link to something like:

Portables
General Hacking
Audio/Video
Power

And on the Overview Page there are Listboxs showing whats in the NTSC and PAL versions, etc.

As we all work on this, and Kurt gets the image uploading working (just sent him the login info) keep in mind here's the kinds of things I'd like to see on here:

Pinouts
Diagrams
Cartridge slot / game pinouts (ie, Famicom-NES converters)
FAQ's by system
Notes per system (caveats, how N64 die easily, etc)
Non-portable yet tech how-to's as well! (controller modding, making cables, etc)
Fixing Xbox 360, possible RROD hair-drier methods, modern things average users might find useful.
So anything 1) useful 2) tech-related. Anything you need off the main site for any of the above (ie, the Radica pinout) feel free to shove into Wiki.

What NOT to put on there:

Any excerpts from either my book or Engadget articles. I have non-competes with both of these, so nothing on the Wiki or main site can copy anything from those outlets.
HOWEVER a "support" page, about either my book or specific projects from Engadget, is fine. Like "Help with the 360 laptop" or "About the Atari CNC project from the book" Just don't copy/paste from either.

Anything illegal or quite dangerous. So please no "how to flash your 360" or "manually wiring to the back of a CRT" please.

We should pick a person to have FTP access to the subdomain as well as an admin login for the Wiki itself.

SO in short, copy/paste anything you'd like from the main site, but nothing directly from the book or Engadget.

ok cool. are we allowed to paraphrase stuff from wikipedia? and how do you want the layout for each system? an overview page, with links to project pages?

I noticed that too! Well, the main page anyway.

Perhaps people should keep local backups of what they add, just in case.

I rolled back the page. As admin you can see the history and even when "all content deleted" The main page is now protected.

We need to get some admins in there besides myself... ideas?

Whats with skyler always trying to make his own personal wiki /right/ when the community tries to do one?

I have a feeling we will be seeing a lot of copying anyways... if they layout is so good, why not just copy it all over now, before theres much information in either of them.

I know sky gets a bit frustrated with the copying of his things. So ill just come out and say this now: if its on a wiki its fair game; you are implying that you do not reserve a copyright by putting on the wiki.

edit: i just went over there... and its all just external links. It looks like a good list of pages that should be wikified over at the official wiki.

The overview page should be like it was on the last wiki. There should be a description of the console itself, maybe a discussion on challenges to making it portable. This /IS/ just a paragraph at the top, you dont need that much detail. then there should be links to the following things, each on their own page:

-pinouts
-scans/pictures of the system and all the boards inside of it
-guides on making a portable out of it
-completed portables (not the same thing as last point!)
-any other relevant information (dc-dc converters, video mods, etc)

Its pretty simple

i dont think we should be putting anything other than a link to another page and maybe one sentence/picture per portable on the 'overview' page. As nice as portables are and as much as everyone likes to show them off, a lot of the time theres not much useful information in the "hey look my portable is done" writeup. On systems like the NES, this would just make the main NES page totally full and cluttered, as 1000 people scramble to make sure their portable stays at the top of the list.

I just dont think we need that much stuff/activity on the main navigation page.

I dont know if we need to split the gameboys page, not many people around here do much with gameboys. plus the page is still blank. we dont want to make 1000,000 pages with 3 sentences on them each. I think the split should be reviewed once there is actually some information on the page. make a note on the talk page maybe.

also. Ive seen people removing red links cause 'theres nothing there yet' or whatever. please dont, as the red links (to pages, images, or otherwise) are there to encourage other people to add content.

and if you dont think the wiki looks good yet, then maybe you should just go fix it yourself

The main page can be edited by registered users, but not anonymous visitors.
