Finger print scanner

I searched Google and got noting.

I would like to make a finger print scanner out of an old scanner i have. I think all i need is software does anyone know were i can download a program like that.

But I'm not real sure were the software for that would be, google it some more! Well anyways good luck with that, it sounds cool.

I'm sure it has to be somewhere in google, just search until you eyes fall out.

Well I hope you find that software, but wouldn't it be hard for the software to pick out the fingerprint, unless it crops the picture, and the finger print is dark black on a white background? And another thing, I wouldn't think the governments wouldn't allow those, seeing as a figure print is someones identity pretty much :O, so I'm not to sure if it's possible to get a software, Oh well good luck it would be a neat thing if it works out well.

If it works I'll scan my finger print and you can test it

Thanks for the offer. But what I mean is to use a scanner as one of those finger print scanners that you can buy and I then plan to use it to unlock a door if the finger print matches one that programmed in already.

A quick search on google gives http://biometrics.qarchive.org/ which leads to http://www.griaule.com/ (not sure how much it helps, didn't read too far into it)
You just need to find a program that'll compare 2 images of fingerprints (hopefully one that can control the scanner, otherwise it'd be a pain)

Oh those things! You can buy them for $15 from somewhere... its in the back of a magazine... some science thing, that lots of schools get.

Technically a finger print is yours and the government can't do anything about how you use it, I believe you can even copyright your own fingerprint and use it for a logo, now on to the bigger question, you might look at some of the people who are kinda conspiracy nuts and find sites for that kind of stuff cause I believe I have seen some home-coded fingerprint software somewhere, I just cant remember where, but those "they're out to get me" type folks are always building their own security measures, let us know if you find it I would like to do something like this for my computer only for my entire hand, cause its harder to fake an entire hand than just a finger

(sorry just skimmed this thread but...)

you cant just take two pictures and compare them pixel for pixel, they will obviously be way different (to a computer) each time. plus, the difference between another fingerprint and yours will be almost nothing compared to the difference between each different scan.

as far as i know, commercial software works by identifying various features of your fingerprint - for example, sometimes the lines end, and there are various kinds of swirls and stuff. you identify as many as these points as you can using photoshop-esque algorithms (Im thinking magic-wand tool here. but what do I know), and if a certain percent match then you are good to go. heres a simple introduction:

With timmeh's stuff about commercial software, you can tell from crime shows like CSI that they compare key features, they have squares around certains spots that are compared.
