Very sad and nooby question..

Well here it goes... laugh all you want.. How do I use tact switches in a controller.. Yes very nooby thing but I've never modded a controller, only have done small system mods, like overclocking, and modchips and stuff

I need to do this for my Genesis/Radica portable I'm gonna make.

If you've ever used the old Atari or Commodore joysticks, or old VCRs they use tacts switches. Tact switches are strictly an on-off switch you press in and it completes the circuit. You use one tact switch for each button.

If you're like one person that did a VCSp you can use tact switches and over lay them with the rubber pads that modern controllers use. To paraphrase what he said, "It gives you that mushy feeling".

As for how to wire them up, I can't give you any direct info there. If you buy your from say RadioShack they'll have a diagram on the back. You should be able to use the same source if you buy your's used from somewhere else.

Thanks that actually helped telling me old vcrs have them, i grabbed one for $2 the other day at the salvation army! the place to get cheap vcrs! I will look inside it today

Lucky. My local Salvation Army wants at least 75 for everything that plugs into the wall besides appliances.

This technique is kind of messy but it works:

Look at your controller PCB. Each button will have a round grey spot on the board. Scratch up the electrical trace on each side of the button you want to relocate, and solder a wire to each.

When you get tact switches, you'll notice they have four legs grouped in two pairs, at least most of the ones I've seen do. (The pairs are kind of obvious when you look at them.) Solder one wire to one of the pins in one pair, and the other wire to a pin in the other pair. Now when you press the tact switch it should register as a button press on the controller.

And thats one pricey salvation army!

I see NES's and SNES's and Genesis and stuff there all the time with carts for $5 each.

I saw halo 2 there for $1.50 and sold it to my friend for $30

And a fish tank thats normally $60 at walk-mart for $15. I have fish now

On a more on-topic note tho..

I have a few spare snes controllers around I'll test this out with 1, but if i can't get it to work, Ill cut the old controller board to fit in the ports, and wire the traces back.

Oh and by the way I'm a smiley whore as you can probably see
