Mehh... I use a mac all the time, but I still don't think this iPhone is the most groundbreaking thing ever. I'd rather have something that runs Palm OS and allows 3rd party development (yes, I've watched the WWDC keynote, and heard Jobs' statement of allowing 'development that won't comprimise security' or something... I figure this means developers will either have to get a license, or will have strict limitations on resources available). I highly doubt it runs a real version of OS X, as that would require a ton of resources that the iPhone doesn't seem to have. Probably a cut-back imitation. The coolest thing, I think, that could happen is if you could use the Terminal. That'd be awesome. Other then apple saying "WIR GRATE LOL IT'S OSX 4 REALS", how do you know that the iPhone OS X is not a brand new OS that resembles and acts like OS X? It's like a simulation of OS X, not unlike the Game and Watch games you can download. It's a recoding of OS X, but technically, it's not the real OS X.
I'll only believe it's the real OS X once I see
a) A Darwin Prompt
b) Cave Story running on it.
c) iCrap (iChat) running on it.
The 'safari' that runs on it is not the same slow, pitiful safari found on the computer. It's completely different. If it was a real OS X, that was just leopard, other than screen difference, it wouldn't look so different.
iChat? iChat blows. I've used OS X for a long time, and I've never liked iChat. If AdiumX was ported to the iPhone, that would be money in the bank. The only time I ever use iChat is for AV chats. Although the new Leopard features that let you put effects in your video chats look cool. Entertaining, at least for a few minutes.
I have a lot of questions about the iPhone, is it going to allow multiple applications, will it have a JVM, etc. I'm not really too interested in it, to tell the truth, it's sort of a neat little gimmick that I think really should only be used by businessmen. I mean, if I had $500 just sitting around, I'd take one (over a PS3 at least). If it had a keyboard, a little more processing power, and a lot more memory, and could run Windows XP as well, I'd buy it for sure.
Can't win em all I guess. But you know tons of people will buy it for no reason.I do have to disagree with your point about Safari. It opens up a hella lot faster than Firefox, runs faster, doesn't freeze my computer half as much. It's just a nimble sort of app, since it was natively written instead of ported. Not sure about how well it'll run on the iPhone though... we'll have to wait and see.
And oh yeah, you can change the theme of Mac OS X. Google 'ShapeShifter.' It's just not included in the OS, but it is supported.
