Ok a few questions.
1. can i get a free xbox live trial?
2. what internet speed do i need?
3. i migt be able to play it in my school on the last day of term so would they possible have something that could stop it?

1. I got 1 month of Gold for free when I first connected my 360 to my internet connection. I got it used off of a friend of mine, but that shouldn't matter.
2. I would think cable or decent DSL would be fine.

there are free services you can use like xlink kai or xbconnect. they dont actually support xbox live, they use the system-link feature that is in certain games to emulate a LAN over a WAN (the internet)
halo and halo 2 support system-link, they are mainly the games that everyone plays. not many people go on as there used to be...
but you need to forward ports or have support for uPNP, both of which probably wont work in a school.
xbox live probably wouldnt work in a school either, for the same reason.
