Blu-Ray gains even more ground in the HD war.

According to this Engadget article, Blockbuster has decided to only stock Blu-Ray movies for their HD section. The decision was made due to testing that showed that Blu-Ray accounted for 70% of HD disc sales. This is an overwhelming blow to the already crumbling forces of HD DVD. If you have recently purchased an HD DVD player, you might want to consider taking it back before your 90 days is up.

Wow. It really seems like Blu-Ray will win now. I personally don't know anyone who uses Blockbuster anymore (you can buy most of those movies for only a couple dollars more than a rental costs), but I guess this will change things a little.

I know, adult entertainment had a hand in bringing VHS out on top, but that's not everything. (After all we aren't talking about the internet.

) Disney's Blu-Ray exclusivity tips the scales a lot more.

personally i dont care either way lol. yay for high capacity storage, boo for rhe drives costing 500$ or more for either one, i still think hddvd has the edge but i dont care either way, optical media will be all but dead in a decade or so anyway

I'd say if Netflix pulled something like this, it would matter significantly more. I know more people with Netflix than who go to Blockbuster regularly.

@Triton: That may not be as big of a deal as it seems. Early CD's had disc rot, as did laserdiscs. Not sure if DVD ever did or not, but I would say as long as they are able to fix the issue, everything will be fine. Blu-ray (and HD-DVD) doesn't have enough market share (yet) for something like this to matter all that much (assuming it gets recalled/fixed).

I've had a few DVDs rot. I dont know if its time to get a blu-ray or HD-DVD player. I'm still working with VHS.

Blockbuster is my main source of movies, so that makes a pretty big impact on me, I'm probably going to get a blu-ray player instead of hd-dvd. I kind of wished HD-DVD would win though because it's cheaper. The disk rot thing is most likely a problem with disk production at whatever place manufactured those movies, and not a problem with the technology itself.

If I remember right, Sony had a lot of problems with Laserdisc. The players were crap and the movies rotted like a corpse.

My dad's girlfriend has a blockbuster subscription where she can get 2 movies at a time with no late fees as long as she pays like $10 a month or something. Not bad when we were in Florida.

Personally I want Blu-Ray to win and it looks like it will. I know Bic mentioned something about porn. I remember that Diggnation had said that porn will be the deciding factor, but we have the internet where you can get it for free...

* a refund on HD-DVD players for the 360
* a Blu-Ray player for the 360

Not to hijack this thread, but does this mean I should ditch my Sony LD player and get a different one? Do the Sony players murder my discs? Or am I just paranoid?

I only remember hearing about problems with players that use helium-neon tube lasers that have a short life span, I haven't heard anything about bad sony players. Just keep yours till it dies, then you'll know if you need to replace it

Yeah I'm sure that'll happen

Sony wants Blu-Ray to win as well as the PS3. Microsoft has already decided to go the HD-DVD movie route this time. They don't even care because they want digital downloads in a few years or so.

I don't know, I read an interview with one of those MS guys who said that if Blu-Ray were to win, they would probably consider making a Blu-Ray add on for 360. when you think about it, why not. why does MS care. If HD DVD goes belly up, they won't be making money on HD DVD players any more, so why not do a Blu-Ray player. It would make them more money, and it wouldn't directly be helping Sony if they didn't use Sony parts. If Blu-Ray becomes the standard, It wouldn't make sense not to offer a player for it.
