Building a computer, need some suggestions

I really appriciate your help xpcportables, but I think I might jump ship and buy a visionman gaming rig for around 800 bucks.

I will give you the link once i get on a computer, as i am typing this on my wii.

But if I can build a pc almost exactly like this gaming rig, but save 100-200 bucks, i will be happy and do that without having to buy 150 bucks worth of warrenty for a pre built computer that I could build cheaper, but they way it looks, i could be spending more.

Thats actually about what the rig I was pricing turned out to be (no monitor or anything, just the tower and its guts). Just add the graphics card of your choice and it'll be a screaming machine, I didn't because if I do get this, I'll just try the onboard video and see if its usable before shelling another $150 out.

If you read this post, I take it back. If not, the X2 5600 is clearly the better processor for the same price. Though the Core2 Extreme kicks all AMD processors in the butt, the vanilla Core2 duo can't compete with this one.

Here's the parts for the computer I'm building for myself for $700

e4300 C2D cpu
mobo with good reviews
2 gb cheap reliable ram
250gb hard drive
8800GTS
cheap case because the money should be spent on the guts
heatsink if you overclock

If you overclock (e4300's overclock really well) to 3 ghz, you get the same performance as a core 2 extreme.

Good choice with the Allendale core, the price is right and the overclocking potential is fantastic, easily the most bang for your buck. Though I agree that the guts are where the money should be spent, having a quality case with good air flow is very important to your system, that's why I recommend the Antec 900. It's not flashy, it's not trying to stand out, It's just a simple design with absolutely fantastic cooling.

actually i had a case just like that but with reviews that said it has excellent airflow bookmarked, but it sold out and that's the cheapest one they have at the moment with a 120mm fan.

I personally recommend going intel for this one man, also an 8800GTS or 8600GT. I own a core 2 duo E6300 and my neighbor has an E6600, both are extremely awesome processors for the money.

DO not go with the 8600Gt it's a waste of money. I have seen benchmarks that tell me that the 7600GT outperforms it in almost every test. I don't know what's wrong with the architecture but something is messed up wwith that card. Get an 8800 of some sort, or jump down to a high end 7 series card if you don't want to spend that much. I know everybody wants direcX 10 but that is a bad idea.

Yeah I know the benchmarks on that card aren't as great, but they will be better as time goes on. Drivers really need to be updated. Besides, the 7600GT can play oblivion with an E6600 and a 1gb of RAM, the game/graphics are pretty incredible.

if you want to start using the "Drivers" argument, then just get a radeon 2600, its like half the price and "driver updates will make it better"

Ok I know that they don't make all the difference, but that doesn't mean that they won't make it better, no? Or how about the driver update for the 8800GTS? Now it can out perform the new ATI DX10 card by a few frames and it's $120 less.

quite right. as of right now, Nvidia seems to have the stronger architecture as far as their high end cards this gen.

Yes yes yes. Gladness is surely among all current nVidia mobo owners. I am thinking of just getting 2 254 8600s and running them in sli. Don't know what game need a 768 or 6xx mb yet, or in the near future. Or I could go crazy, get a loan, and buy 2 8800 GTXs. :$:
