Genesis and Screen off of 4 AA's?

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

Genesis and Screen off of 4 AA's?

I'm planning a Genesis portable out right now, and was wondering something; I've made a really nice looking 4AA battery pack to go on this thing, but will that be enough voltage? The HipGear I'm using will be powered fine by it, but how about the Genesis 3? Seeing as it uses a 7805, I just assumed it would run fine off of 6 volts, but is that the case? The amperage draw should be no problem, as it's fairly low on both components, but this voltage thing, I'm not so sure. Thanks!

I'll go check ben's book, it says something about 7805 dropout levels.

...It needs 7 volts, it says in the book. So you might wanna research on a regulator which changes 6 to 5 volts for the project. The only regulator I know of is 7805, so I have no idea of a 6 to 5 volt regulator, so I can't help you there.

I think 7805's really drop out at 6v, I have a screen that has a 7805 and thats as low as I could get it while still being useful (worked on 5v when I jumped the 7805, of course).

6v will work fine if you just hook it up to the output pins of the 7805. It's not very sensitive to the input voltage (just like the toploader NES), so you should be fine with anything from 4-6 volts. I ran mine of of 4AAs for a few hours once. But if it eventually gets fried from using 6v, don't blame me.

The best thing you can do is to use 4 rechargeable AAs; that makes 4.8V which is nearest to 5. Additionally, I used it for my SNES a week ago and it worked quite well. Just give the voltage to the out pin of the 7805 IC.

Meh, I think I'll just go ahead and use a high-capacity battery pack, it'll get me more bang for my buck anyways. Thanks for the help, guys! :D
