Cpu fan sense cable (speed cable)

Ok I am cheap and all I have laying around is the cpu fabs with the 3rd wire.
I want to build my own Wii intercooler

Would I be able to chop this 3rd wire off and still be functional, do I need to ground it, or do I need to apply voltage, or should I just go out and buy fan with no speed cable.

The fan I plan to use is a Dreamcast fan since I cant find my Gamecube fan. And this intercooler is just to keep the Wii cool during Wiiconnect24.

And I need a wire pinout for the DC fan.

Try it with 12v and see if it works (+ to red - to black, of course). I think all the fans I've tried have worked without using the 3rd wire (so you could just cut it off), but it might be best to check.

If you run it off the 5v from the USB ports on the Wii, it'll either be too slow to make much of a difference or won't even work. I think there are fans made to run off 5v, so it would be best to get one of those if you are going that path.

I am planning on using a external power source as it supplys more power, but if i can figure out the wire pinout of the DC Fan I will use that with the USB port, but its colors for the wires are odd. Blue, Red, and orange.

Yes you were right, you dont need the speed cable.

the third wire sends a short pulse for every time the fan goes around once. the fan works fine without it hooked up. its for the computer to tell how fast the fan is going.

to go the other way around (put a two-wire fan in a 3-wire spot) might cause problems when the computer thinks that its fan is stopped.
