computer sound isn't working

Earlier today, my computer's sound was working great. I came back later, and now it won't make any sound. The speakers aren't the problem because i tested it with several speakers/headphones, and the microphone works. It makes a louder buzz when I turn up the volume on the task bar, but no ding or anything. What's going on and how do I fix it?

Did you check the wave volume slider?

Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Volume control and it should be the second slider form the left.

just checked that. still no go

EDIT: Fixed! Just installed a new sound card.

You might have run into a similar problem I have in the past. If I'm using a set of head phone (mine are USB), if they are pulled out anything that was playing wont have any audio output until I restarted it. This meant I had to restart a media play if I was watching a video, or I had to restart Firefox if I was using YouTube's player.

It sucks and frustrating, but if when you restart the program and it works that's your problem. And I've never figured out a way around it, it just doesn't work you have to restart the program no mater what.

May sound stupid and complete common sense, but did you try resetting your system audio properties to default and rebooting your PC?

I did try all that stuff before i installed the new sound card, but i like the new one better anyway because it has surround sound
