Wait, so this guy is saying all the games on there are " overrated? ". WTF are you crazy? Seriously these games are in the top ranks because they are GOOD not " overrated ". Cmon man.

Um... "good" is an opinion, not a fact. Just because someone doesn't agree with you, that doesn't mean they're "mentally deficient" or "crazy".

In my opinion most of those games are overrated. A lot of quality games get overlooked because the same games get the limelight year after year.

actually they're in the list because they are games commonly played by the group of people who sit around and vote in those polls.

I looked at my personal top ten list. only one was a nintendo exclusive (ff3) and two others on my list were made into pretty bad nes ports. nintendo's had some good games--and my favorite handheld system ever, but saying that most/all of the best games are on nintendo is only true for a certain segment of the population.

I personally find 3d adventure/platformer titles boring and unplayable, so of course nintendo's are not on my list, but to each their own.
speaking of which, now that I have a list, I wonder if there's a top 10 games thread I could drag back to life.

Freebird does rock pretty hard. Don't know if it's the best ever, but it's pretty damn good.

Warthog is correct that it is an ordeal to get through that song on GH2 the first couple of times. But it's a blast to play!

I do think reviewers and polls go too hung-ho with the Nintendo love. Especially stupid cases involve rating Mario 1 as the "best game ever" (bullocks) or rating it higher than Mario 3, which is much more deserving.

Professional critics (for movies and games) have TOO good of memory. "Reader's Choice" has very limited short-term.

Also to look at these lists you realize how few games Nintendo makes. Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pokemon, and derivatives thereof. The beloved "Smash Bros" is the same thing since the N64 era, just with a few new characters.

Ben, not everything is about franchise. I look at your loving for Castlevania, which has been pooped out about 10 times, and other's loving for Final Fantasy, which has also been reproduced 17 times. Smash Bros, which is about to be recreated for the third time, is just another opinion.

People rate games based on what they did for the gaming community, and Nintendo (we should all agree on this one) has a lot of games that do that. Super Mario Bros. was the first to take gaming into a side-scrolling land. Yes, I know someone else would've thought of it sooner or later, but Nintendo thought of it first. Super Mario 64 expanded on gaming by tossing it into 3D, which had a controllable camera and a multiplex of moves and attacks. Zelda (OoT) - I'll never understand why it was so good, really.

Anyways, Nintendo accomplished NOTHING software-wise with the Gamecube, but I can't wait to see what they do with the Wii.

EDIT: Forgot to mention Goldeneye 64, but you guys should know about that already.

Sky, I have to disagree. Pitfall was a side-scrolling (sort of) platforming game before Mario 1, even Pitfall 2 pre-dates it. Plenty of games were scrolling platformers before Mario 1.

As for Mario 64, look for an obscure PS1 game called Jumping Flash. A 3D platformer.

Nintendo has done a lot, but to suggest they've thought of everything first is wii-visionist history. (See also: analog joysticks on Atari 5200 - 1982)

I can agree with you on Pitfall, but what I was trying to point out with Mario 64 is the camera angles. I own Jumping Flash, and the camera angles and FPS aren't even close to what Mario 64 put out.

Even with Pitfall, Super Mario Bros. brought a faster gameplay because it didn't need to refresh the play field after each screen shift.

And no, Nintendo has not done everything, but they have done a lot. They're the longest-living console creators in the business, and have seen and accomplished a lot in that time.

I agree with a good number of your points here, Ben, but I have to call you out on this one. Though "Smash Bros" may not reinvent the genre every time a new one is made, it's a tried and true formula that works, so why change it? I mean, Street Fighter has been the same game since they released Street Fighter II back in 1991, but they're still the best fighting games on the planet, bar-none. My point is, games evolve, and innovators come; change is inevitable, this is true. But there is that rare chance that a game developer gets it perfect, in which case there's no need to mess with the formula.

Stairway to Heaven is the best song i've ever heard.
