Another Nintendo vs. Haters thread.

Post by Kurt_ »

Didn't want to steal a good thread from the TP, so here's a continuation of that Wii one.

OoT is #2 on IGN's list (IGN = good trusted gaming source)
http://top100.ign.com/2005/001-010.html

Also note 6/10 of the top 10 are Nintendo games. the other 4 are PC. The first not Nintendo or PC game is #16, Castlevania for PS1.

http://www.filibustercartoons.com/games.htm
Overall

Assuming these lists represent voices of authority in the gaming community, we can easily make a cumulative list averaging out the most universally popular games. I'm not smart enough to do mathematical averages of rank, but based on sheer popularity (as defined by appearing on 14 or more lists, ie: at least 50%), the top five games of all time seem to be:

1 Super Mario 64 (18 out of 27 lists) 66%
2 Tetris (appears on 17 out of the 27) 62%
2 Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (17 out of 27) 62%
3 Street Fighter II (14 out of 27) 51%
3 Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (14 out of 27) 51%
All of which are, you guessed it, NINTENDO GAMES.

Keep in mind that it looks like some of those sources are simply trying to promote their games. 9/10 games of GameSpy's list are PC.

I don't exactly know what you're trying to say. But some things in life aren't popularity contests.

I love Nintendo vvvv but not a fan of bragging. Good info though.
Valve is the best company.

That's the old one, man. HERE'S the 2006 Top 100, not to mention it's a Reader's Choice. Chrono Trigger's #2. :P This latest one is actually a lot more forgiving to non-Nintendo competitors, and I tend to trust the readers of IGN far more than I trust the boneheaded staff they have over there.

Well this is what started it. Ben's Hooligan Friend Jones. Who dislikes the N64 like some other guy.

I do believe that the N64 totally dominated everything ever. This years top 100 games had OoT as #1, nearly 10 years after it came out.

Like with all of things of this nature that is a very subjective statement. Just like any Top Ten list it's relative and more of a starting point for discussion, rather than being the end all be all answer on the matter.

For me the N64 was the beginning of the end for Nintendo. All it had going for it was Goldeneye. It lost damn near everything else that was worthwhile from the third party vendors. And as I have said before Zelda and Mario in 3-D never got it done for me. Ever since then Nintendo has been either the second (n64), third (Gamecube) or no (Wii) system for me. It's really too bad because the SNES and NES were such wonderful systems.

At least the N64 controller wasn't too shabby. OoT would be nowhere a Top 100 list for me. Now A Link to the Past on the other hand? That's a different story. Wink

Too bad this wasn't a couple weeks back. A guy I work with just picked up a Wii at that time. He probably would have been all over this. He did say a friend of his was looking to possibly buy one. I forwarded the link on just in case. I'm sure you won't have any trouble selling it.

I agree on the eBay thing. I saw one say that they were selling a Wii with 15 games. 5 of the games were from Wii Sports and then another chunk of them were from Wii Play (eight I think, but I don't recall). Pretty shameless really, but I'm sure there are some people who will fall for it.

FYI: Street Fighter 2 was an arcade game long before it ever appeared on the SNES. And it was made by Capcom, not Nintendo.

You have to admit that nostalgia enters into the equation on a lot of these lists. Nintendo has been in the game a lot longer than Sony or MS, so they have properties that have more nostalgic value (as well as probably have been played by a greater number of people over the years).

It's very similar to any other top ten lists (movies come to mind). Older titles are usually dominant and anything released in the decade or two are pretty much non-existent. Citizen Kane is always number one, Casablanca is always there, etc. My list would contain some classics, but also some more contemporary fare as well.

Music is the same way. Almost every list of the greatest albums all time has a couple of Beatles albums, a Led Zeppelin album, something by Dylan, and even something by Elvis. While none of these artists are bad a top ten list of my design would contain none of them. It would be comprised of the likes of Tool, NIN, Bruce Springsteen, and Stone Temple Pilots. I'm sure your list would be much different.

Thus proving once again that these sorts of things are all relative.

They are interesting numbers, but in the end that's all they are. Plus, like CTfan said, a poll of our peers (rather than a bunch of talking heads at a gaming site) is much more interesting to digest and discuss.

Well, poll!

I'm confident that 40% or more of the members here will pick Ocarina of Time as the #1 game of choice, winning the poll. Ff that is what the poll is about. Brand, 60% will say Nintendo.

Yes! I'm a hooligan! Now I just need to make my way to England for an Arsenal match and my life will be complete. :D

I never said I dislike the N64. I actually didn't think it to be a bad system, unfortunately in my case it just didn't have much for games to hold my interest. There were many a weekend spent playing Goldeneye into the wee (not Wii) hours of the morning with my friends. That was the only game I ever would say I got my money's worth out of on the system. Shadows of the Empire and Rogue Squadron were okay, but didn't last and Mario Kart 64 was just a rehash of the one from the SNES.

All I said was that it didn't cut it for me. It's not like I called it crap or anything.

What exactly are you hoping to prove with this?

What will the choices be?

Will there be a none of the above selection? Because something tells me I won't care for any of the choices I'm given.

I typically don't agree with any of these polls. They usually have Halo, Zelda OoT, Metal Gear, and Final Fantasy games littering them. For the most part all highly overrated games.

I think the main reason the same games always come up on those top-10 lists is because they're the kid games most of the 17-22 year olds who compile the lists grew up playing. It's mainly for nostalgia. I believe there are a lot of games that don't make it on the lists that really deserve the spots much more. For example, you always see Mario Kart games up there but not, say, Crash Team Racing, a similar (and I think much better) game.

Believe it or not some people just don't care about Zelda, myself included. I don't believe those games belong in top 10 lists because they're basically the same. There are many, many RPGs out there and all the 2D ones start to look the same. So what makes the SNES Zelda games so special, besides the characters?

And why are we called "haters" because we have a differing opinion, and it's nearly blasphemous to say something against Nintendo while Microsoft and Sony bashing is fair territory? :?

I feel similarly towards the Zelda games. I personally don't like the 2D ones and I haven't even tried any 3D ones. They look pretty cool, but I'm just not in to those kind of games.
Most of my older favorite games are made by Nintendo, but what do you expect from someone thats hardly played a PS1? Some of them are Super Mario World for GBA (because I like the button setup better than the SNES one), Super Mario 64, 007 Goldeneye (the FPS that revolutionized killing), and Super Smash Bros. The only modern game that makes it on my favorites list is Halo 2.

Look I fall in on the age demography for most of those polls and I can say that Mario64 and OoT are up there like top 20, maybe OoT could be in the top 10. I just find it silly that OoT keeps seeing placement of #1 or #2. The reason a game should be high up there is not just how much do you like it, but how much time did you invest in playing it.

Me personally I'd have games like Street Fighter 2 (the whole series) be in my top 10. I played that thing for somewhere like two straight years. Anytime there was a gathering, people wanted to play SNES and someone and if someone had the cartridge then we had a mini-tournie. Same goes for Soul Calibar, one, 2 and even 3. I played it a long time with people on the Dreamcast, played 2 on the Gamecube, and 3 on the PS2.

Listing games because of nostalgia doesn't make much sense to me unless you like to play them a lot and that constitutes you have ports or you play roms. If you don't the whole idea of "I loved playing that game, so I'm going to vote for it" doesn't fit with me. Particularly if it's something like Mario Bros. and you're voting and haven't played it in years.
