There should be something other. I used 7.2 Volts 4200mAh battery pack for my Sega Sahne. It's working wonderful and about 3.5-4 hours of play.

I will look into these batteries more, however what stopped me previously from using similar types was the size.
My project requires 14 batteries, which is quite heavy. Getting all the electronics takes full height of a medium sized lunchbox and 14 batteries take a lot of space too. Using about 80% of the space in the lunchbox! That's why I am trying to stay with AA batteries - size. In process of butchering the base of the lunchbox and making it custom.
I was running my previous test with a couple of 2600NiMH batteries and the rest 2500NiMH. Intending to buy a stack of 2700NiMH batteries, so should get definitely get over 2 hours with these!

Turbo Tax 1.0 - 6 for the Transverter, 6 for the PSone screen and 2 for the GBA itself. Using the same set of 6 for the Transverter and PSone screen takes a big drain - batteries last about 10 minutes and get very hot - so had to use a set of batteries for each item. If too little power is given to the Transverter then the screen becomes a bit wavy - both the PSone screen and Transverter are hungry!
Already got the answer. You may use the battery pack I used for my portable; it's 4200mAh. With a led modded screen you shouldn't come across any problems. My battery pack is around 300 grams; it'll save you space, weight and more power. Consider 
P.S. You can build a circuit for the GBA to get power from that pack also. You needn't use seperate 2 AAs for the device.

c_mon - 2 sets of batteries, each 2500NiMH sets I imagine would need the equivalent of nearly 5000NiMH for one set to be like for like - both items need lots of power; I tried normal NiMH batteries and the screen died almost immediately and the Transverter gives wavyness with normal NiMH batteries too. This is why photo (digital) NiMH batteries are needed. Yes, if the LED mod is done it will need less draw, so 4200NiMH (as you used) would be probably the same as now - would save some weight, but unlikely to give more playtime between the two power draining parts.
I looked at the LED mod details, looks risky and parts of the instructions are not clear (in my view). It also gives the impression that the screen is not as good with the LED mod afterwards, and it looks easy to damage the screen during the mod.
Yes, I would save some weight, and a little space; but as I am a little cautious about the LED mod I have to stay with the current set up. There is plenty of power in the photo (digital) NiMH batteries I use as the spread is shared over 2 battery sets as the batteries stay cool, which indicates they are ok.
Yes, I could save 2 batteries by linking to the GBA mobo - I bought a step-down regulator to give 3v from the 6 battery pack, but instead of 3v I could only get 1.3v; so I couldn't do this. I could however had modified the battery pack itself in hindsight, but it is a bit late now! Yes, you are right, I could have got away with 12 batteries instead of 14...
