You may already know this, but the Nintendo DS does have support for a rumble pack, via the GBA port. Sometimes a flash card will make the DS boot menu say that a rumble pack is inserted, and you can even set the alarm to activate a rumble pack! So it definitely has everything it needs built right into it, all we need is for Nintendo to release the cartridge!Lucretius wrote:If you're not too far into the project, see if you can find a way to get a rumble pak atatched to it. That's what I wish I had for the NDS. A rumble pak for it. Made game play real neat for me on the N64. Just wanted to say that...night everybody

I've wired up the new expansion pak (skipping connections that go to ground) and it still doesn't work.
I also tried wiring the main power switch back up the original way (and having the 12 and 3.3 volt powers going right to the plug) No dice.
ARGH! N64's are DIRT cheap (like $15 at the same place I got the rumble pak) but I'd had to take the darn thing apart again and re-wire the cartridge slot and expansion pak.
But I've also gone too far to NOT finish it!
Any advice?

hmmmmmmm.........perhaps the 7805 is screwed up? or the N64 could be fried, too.........I know how you feel , though, these N64s are pretty damn fragile
!!!!!!!!!! I had to do three cart. slot relocations in one day because they kept frying
(I was trying to finish an N64p before I went to Vienna, and I was so close too
)....
anyway, if after you've gotten a new expansion pack, wired it up, and it STILL doesn't work, it seems as if you'll need a new N64 board

Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

Something else I've noticed... the 3.3 volt reg gets really hot really fast. It still outputs the correct voltage (like 3.28 I think) but yeah, you turn it on and in a matter of 5 seconds it's too hot to touch. It's only going from 8.5 to 3.3, shouldn't be THAT bad. And I've tried both the 3.3 regs I ordered (I order 2 in case one gets fried)
To me this spells a short-circuit or one of the 3.3 volt components in the N64 fried and sinking power like mad...
I suppose what I could do is buy another N64 and try to run it off the batteries/reg before I even start hacking it/rewiring things. I just didn't know they were so fragile! Other systems you can overload and mess up and they keep ticking (usually just the reg's fry)

I take it you tried the method of powering it without a cart first? Are all the cart port wires in correctly? Is the cart in backwards?

Well I went and got another N64 (only $14) I wired it with the 3.3 reg and the batteries and it worked fine. So apparently SOMEHOW the other N64 got fried (I checked the cartridge rewiring 3 times, I'm pretty sure it wasn't that)
So NOW I am going to rewire the cartride slot, then test, then re-wire the expansion, test, instead of rewiring EVERYTHING and testing.
Maybe I'm getting too cocky! Oh well, assuming everything goes well now I can probably still have it done by early next week.

Or the greatest idea ever!G-force wrote:lol, a water cooled N64!Thats about the dumbest idea ever.
I'm not suprised that you fired the thing, after all collectively I'm sure theres about 20 N64 (maybe more) that have fired when attempting to make it portbale. This explains why I'm so meticulaous about if something will damage something else or not.
