I was playing yesterday with it plugged into the wall via Genesis model 2/3 AC adaptor. I also had the audio outputting to my stereo through a 3.3mm (or whatever headphone jacks are) -> RCA stereo adaptor. Actually, the cable I was using was meant for computer audio output, but it was still the standard size for headphones or computer speakers. Don't know if this had anything to do with it.
Anyways, as it was going through the game's intro, the screen just went off. The backlight doesn't work, and I don't get picture AT ALL. The thing still works. It turns on and I can hear the game.
This isn't the end of it. I turned it on once and the audio was warped. Another time I turned it on the timing was off - the audio was going way too fast.
I've also noticed before that the thing gets hot fast, and it makes my hands sweat. Is that normal for GameGear?
I do not have a 4.5mm security bit so opening the thing up is out of the question. That is, until I learn what's wrong with it.
Crap! What happened to my GameGear?!

Use the tool anyway, magnetic or not. There's no magnetic storage in the Game Gear, and chips aren't harmed by a little magnetic field, so it won't be harmed. Besides, if there were any magnetic storage devices in it, you would need a magnet much stronger than a screwdriver to cause damage. You won't hurt your Game Gear with a magnetic screwdriver unless you stab a hole through the motherboard with it.

There IS the possibility that you cranked too much juice into it, frying a regulator. Check the voltage & mAh rating on your gamegear & compare them to the AC adapter used.

I also use the Genesis 2/3 ac adapter with no problems. Tried to open one up tho (using the melting pen method) and after about 20 minutes of prying I got it open. I f'd up my screen tho haha. The top 1/4th of the screen doesn't show up anymore, so be careful when you open yours up.
(luckily that was my backup and I'm planning to destroy that one and hopefully make a GGTV console)

Imagine if it where still under warranty. Would you tell tech support you used a 850-1200mA AC adapter on your 300mA GameGear? Because that's exactly what you did.
