batman is waaaay older. He was in his 30s in the 60s, so he must be around 70-80 now.

Batman's the one guy who can kick Superman's ass on a recurring basis, and Superman's declining popularity stems from the fact that he's completely invulnerable. 'Nuff said. Besides, you know how it goes... Batman always finds a way.

Yes, but the reason he's generic is because he lacks character flaws and weaknesses, thusly meaning that his declining popularity is due to his invulnerability.

He still deserves props for being the first superhero, though.

True, but Kryptonite still isn't a character flaw. Being able to wail on Superman with a metal rod that contains a peculiar atomic makeup doesn't make him any more personable.
