Lightsaber

I want to make a lightsaber like the realistic force fx ones, but how? I want to make one of these coz I need money for a lot of other things, and I dont want to spend all that money on a lightsaber. Ive searced the net and I havent found anything that good. Does anyone have any ideas or recommendations?

PS: u can probaby guess i'm into starwars now.

I'm talking about a working lightsaber... well I mean it needs a blade.

Ive looked everywhere now, using: lightsaber,lightsabre,lasersaber,lightsword in google and on youtube and I can't find anything anything and I tried adding these too: build your own, homemade, homebuilt, built, DIY, do it yourself. Thats why im posting on benheck, can someone please help me, the only good site i've found is lasersabers, which cost more that the real ones. should I just give up?

I don't think its really possible to make a killing lifesaber. You would have to order one from think geek or something like that. I also saw some at my local future shop. But i really don't think you can build one that actually hurts people.

You would probably have to use some sort of IC (maybe a BASIC chip?) that lights up a row of LEDs in sequence. Then it would need to reverse the process to turn them off. A fluorescent tube would look more like the movies but they don't light up the same and waving those around is dangerous. (There's mercury in them.)

@ Twisted Warthog: You can make one that hurts people if you make it heavy enough. (Basically a shiny club.)

Yeh I want the force fx lightsabers, but I want to make one so that its not so expensive (like a simple hilt and stuff)

EDIT: Ok, I have read that they use 64 LED's going vertically up, and turing on in a sequence and turning of in a sequence, which shouldn't be that hard to do (if only I knew how to make sequences). But where can I get LED's that bright.

I was thinking that a pipe of clear, strong plastic with LEDs at the base would be cool, I just don't know what plastic to use for the blade that would be cheap and strong enough to withstand hitting stuff.

OK the LED's are 3 dollars (australian which is like umm
2.49 american) and if I get 64 it will be like 192 bucks (159.88 american)
So why don't I just get a force fx. But what about this

Those look pretty cool. You should be able to find bulk LEDs for that much, too.

I don't know which I'd choose, the bulk or thw strip.

More like this (thats on eBay US). They're cheaper than those lights, but the strips might be easier (not as much soldering).
