Shutting Down Michigan

Post by gamer2 »

WILX

"If we run out of money and have to shut down government, in some form, some portions, it's a terrible message about Michigan," Governor Jennifer Granholm told a manufacturers' group Tuesday.

This is kind of Scary, I live in Michigan. To me this sounds like a start to a Battle Royale scenario.

they're probably just talking about non-essential services taking an extra day off. didn't the federal government do one of those a while back?
no the police will not get the day off

states go in debt all the time, though. Back when I lived in CA that state had more debt than some nations--and I'm sure it still does.

edit: never mind, after reading the article, your little drama queen there is crying because she's not getting her way. that's definitely in the realm of politics rather than sense, and you're just buying the load.

You can't really talk about this without getting political, so I'll keep it vague: This is what liberal economics get us. I mean, look at who the people complaining are!
"We are upset," union steward Steve Gilroy told News 10.
A union rep, one of the most liberal organizations ever. As an avid studier of politics and a resident of Michigan, this is just a natural flow of economics, a recession, and no matter what false prophetic hopes Grandholm preaches, nothing will come of it, just like nothing came out of FDR's New Deal during the Depression; the natural balance of WW2 pulled us out. I mean, come on, the article cites NEW JERSEY, the most liberal state in our nation, as one of the key examples of where Michigan is headed. Don't you think there's a bit of a pattern?!?

I'm getting tired of people using "liberal" as if it were some sort of expletive, same with the term "neo-con."

Classical liberalism is laissez-faire economics, the idea of which is that the free market is served best by not being regulated. The "liberal economics" that you refer to is more of a federalist or socialist idea, heavy government regulation.

Also, if you're going to ignore the "no politics" rule, don't keep it vague, it makes you seem ignorant, either blatantly disobey it, or don't post anything about politics at all.

Hey you guys try paying an over $14 billion bill for 3 miles of leaky tunnels. :P

They're probably going to shut down some non-critical services for a day or two, sort of like they do on all the federal holidays. (Declaring a new federal holiday is usually a nicer-sounding cover up for budget cuts.)

This really shows how crappy the economy is. :( Not to get too political but if we followed Clinton's plan we would have been completely out of debt by 2010. We probably won't pay off our current deficit in our lifetimes.

I'm not exactly going to bother checking my pay stub or anything, but federal holidays are generally paid. granted there is a decrease in the overall cost of business with everybody staying home, but it's not the shutdown being talked about here.

I seem to recall CA talking about one while I was there. I don't recall if they went through with it, just the awful radio ads. months worth of ads I had to listen to, all about the possibility of two unpaid days. I really don't miss that state, maybe it will fall into the sea someday.

the topic seems to have wandered a bit from minor government shut downs into other areas. When government "shuts down" riots do not break out, and frogs do not rain from the sky. But if anybody else wants to go to michigan and try for a 'free' plasma screen--I'm totally there too.

Laissez-faire is the market our country was founded on, and has since been aligned with a Conservative economic base. Conservatives = less government in economics, Liberals = more governemt involvement in economics. And yes, though the root word "Liberal" means exactly the opposite of what it's definition is here in today's America, the terms Liberal and Conservative were slated specifically in the Great Depression, when many of our democratic thinkers began to doubt laissez-faire capitalism, especially after Hoover's presidential bid. So I agree with you in the sense that you are correct in the roots of the term Liberal, but it's also very evident that the definition has changed.

Bic, I like you a lot man, but Clinton was a deficit spender, you know that, right? :P It's the Democratic strategy to assist our country's economic system by putting their foot in and spending money that we don't have, and that's just what Clinton did.

while I did bring in the definitions of classical liberalism and Laissez-faire Capitalism, what I was really going after is that you (and you're not alone in this) were using liberal as a pejorative in your original post. While I would really like to get everyone to use the terms "conservative" and "liberal" correctly, I don't think that's going to happen any time soon, too many people use them incorrectly and without the proper context, and are apparently too lazy to learn how to use those terms correctly.

Go ahead and refer to it as "Democratic economic values." I don't even care if you badmouth them left and right, just please stop bastardizing the term "liberal" even more by using it as a pejorative.

The US economy is not Laissez-faire capitalism. Laissez-faire is no gov't intervention what so ever. The US has a "Mixed Market" economy, which is capitalism with a small hint of communism. The Gov't intervenes a lot in the US economy, but we still choose What, When, how much, and to whom is produced.

I also agree that the English language has a bunch of backwards words... As for this, maybe if those greedy phonies would take a salary deduction this wouldn't be a problem. The economy isn't bad at all, and every country in the world is in debut.

It is true that it isn't currently Laissez-faire capitalism, but that is what it was originally founded on

Yes, but this is all just because we have such a split political spectrum in our country of how economics should be run anymore. It really is interesting to look back and see how much opinions on just about every issue have molded and evolved over the past 100 years.

And SavageLynch, I definitely agree; the economy here in the US definitely isn't as bad as it's made out to be. In fact, we're THRIVING compared to many of the larger countries out there today! (Russia, Germany, etc.)

It happens from time to time. You shouldn't worry yourself over it.

... Unless you get robbed/shot/injured/etc.

No, seriously, I kid.
