Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia

Post by gamer2 »

Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia (literally, "fear of the number six-hundred and sixty-six") is the fear that originates in the Biblical verse Revelation 13:18 which indicates that the number 666 is the Number of the Beast, linked to Satan or the Anti-Christ. However, this was originally written as 616, but was changed. Outside the Christian faith, the phobia has been further popularized as a motif in various horror films. Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobes will strongly avoid things related to the number 666. A prominent example is of Nancy and Ronald Reagan who, in 1989, when moving to their home in the Bel-Air section of Los Angeles, had the address of 666 St. Cloud Road changed to 668 St. Cloud Road. One may notice, however, that Ronald Wilson Reagan has 6 letters in all three of his names. Some women also expressed concern on giving birth to a child on 6/6/2006.

Your thoughts? Your Thoughts on how to pronouce it?

DCLXVI.... Yeah that's a scary number.

Really as many historians have said if you translate 666 into roman numerals you'll find it's a name. The name is of Emperor Nero, yeah the crazy guy that blamed the Christians for the fires in Roman, that potentially started himself.

Did anyone else glance at the title and think straight edge?

i dont see what the big deal about 666 is

its not really particulary a religious thing now, its more a part of popular myth/culture as far as i see it

It always amuses me that satanist claim to be atheist yet if you believe in the devil then surely you must believe in god?

thoughts on what? the phobia or the beast?
I will say that people get far too hung up on things. especially where faith is concerned, a lot of what is normally considered a mental problem gets a pass. Saying any more is pretty sticky ground on a forum aimed at technology and gaming.

I'm thrilled that you're amused by that. You could try to do a little more than publicize your assumptions about the beliefs of others. Especially when you don't really know your audience.

Not to continue this on to a religious discussion, but...

The whole thing about 666, the mark of the beast. People don't seem to understand that what it is, is identification. The bible only speaks about it as those that are allied with the beast will have it on their forehead or right hand. It talks nothing about how it's evil incarnate just because it's a mark used by evil. If you see someone cringe at the site or mention of "666" tell them to go re-read the passages.

There's more common sense surrounding paraskavedekatriaphobia (fear of Friday the 13th), then this one. At least something really happened to make people fear Friday the 13th... And not it's not because of the movie. It's because that was the day the Knights Templar were arrested, tortured and executed. So fear of something like that or as is popular today, "bad luck", isn't too out of place.

In any bible you look at, it will say something along these lines:

"That was the number of the beast. Six Hundred Sixty Six." In NO WAY was it ever 616. That is an internet lie.

It all is. 666 is just like any number. Just like 7 or 13 or 2067. Luck does not exist. Or anything along that line. (as in fate, for example)

Or does it?

Who things that "00110110 00110110 00110110" will be burned on to the computers and foreheads of those that use Windows in the future?

Back on topic. I think this "phobia" shouldn't even be classified as a phobia, it's just a stupid superstition.

666 is kind of symbolic, and its written on desks, lockers, and bathrooms all over my school
