Yea things do cost real money. BUT
You can make your own items. Heck you can make ANYTHING!
You can also get a lot of items for free. Wings, swords ect. Just ask someone.

Second Life is pretty neat, but in the end it is little more than a chat room with a sandbox. Linden likes to talk about how you could technically create entire games within Second Life, such as shooters and rpg's, but it just doesn't happen. Its worth trying out, and it is free, but the entertainment factor varies greatly from person to person.
