All help will be greatly appreciated, but make sure it's right, unless otherwise stated in your solution.

All help will go towards a quicker release of my first portable.

1) The Earth has an electric field around it, similar to that around a positively charged sphere. It's magnitude at the surface of the Earth is about 100.0 N/C. What charge would an oil drop have to be suspended by the Earth's electric field if the drop has a mass of 2.00 x 10^-15 kg? Give your answer in elementary charges.

2) An argon nucleus is placed above another argon nucleus such that it remains suspended above it. How far apart are they?

3) 2 Alpha particles are fired at each other at 0.0025c. What is their distance of closest approach?

4) An alpha particle starts at rest between two parallel plates with 2000.0 V applied to it. What speed would it have at the negative plate if a) it starts at the positive plate? b) if its tarts midway?

5) A pith ball of mass 1.0 x 10^-5 has a positive charge of 0.40 micro coulombs and is at rest. It is slowly pulled by a string 50 cm through a potential difference of 800.0V. The pith ball is then released where it returns back to its original position. Find:
a) The work done by the string to move the pith ball.
b) the average force required to perform this work
c) the kinetic energy with which the pith ball attains as it returns back to its starting point.
d) its speed upon return to the starting point.

6) Two electrons are held at rest, 10^-12m apart and released. What is each of their kinetic energy and speed at a very large distance apart?


You can still do these if you want, but through a quick google search of the first question, I found a PDF with all the solutions in it. :twisted:

you know, just having the answers is not particularly helpful. even if someone else does the problem for you, i would question whether or not you have a good grasp of the material. if you are sure of what you are doing, this is likely moot, but the whole point of doing these assignments is to assess YOUR ability to solve the problems..

that being said, it all looks like relatively simple conservation of energy problems...

Well I'm retaking the course next year...

I don't grasp anything though. Thank god for those solutions, I'd be spending all week figuring them out or begging other people for solutions.

Mass of the oil drop = m
Gravitational force on the oil drop = m*g
Electric field has to exert an equal an opposite force for the drop to be suspended.
100 N/C means 0.01 C/N => m*g*0.01 C/N = charge in Coulombs.
In case you didn't know, g = 9.8 m/s^2

Feel free to plug the numbers in and see if it matches what you found.

I'll see if I can do some of the others later, that one was easy though.
