Finding a new host

As mentioned in the "Server Speed" topic this new VPS system seems actually worse than the cheaper service I had before. Sadly that service was perfectly fine 95% of the time and only crashed under a deluge of visitors. But they won't let me go back.

So what I'm thinking is perhaps you all would like to suggest hosting plans and services to me. (Right now it's iPowerweb, whom I loved until I got their VPS)

Requirements:

At least 20 gig disk space (this site uses about 4 gigs, but wiggle room is good)

Montly transfer of 200-300 gigs. This would cover normal usage, but for instance last September when the 360 laptop was on we did over 1 terabyte.

PHP, MySQL, all that jazz

A good control panel. I really liked vDeck, now I have Plesk. Maybe the site just makes it seem slow and lame.

Price range: $20-$50/month. Again I would have no problem with $50/month if it was super fast.

There's some sites that seem to be consistently highly rated (such as HostGator) but there's so many Top 10 lists it's confusing, and who knows which aren't sponsered?

2 popular places I know about are DreamHost and GoDaddy. I'm not sure how fast either of them are, but they are both fairly well known and have more space/bandwidth than you wanted for about that price. GoDaddy has had commercials in the super bowl, so they can't be too much of a hole-in-the-wall-of-the-internet kind of place

PoD (and the other sites I host) used to be at a Servage account, but for more low level control I moved to Dreamhost. Both are good and cheap (<$10 month), but I know that servage has a daily limit of 1/30th of your account total bandwidth.

Its the most budget hosting you can find and its pretty good imo. Granted my website doesn't get a lot of traffic and all but it loads plenty fast and they have pretty good customer service. They don't have a plan that fits your needs but I bet if you gave them a call you could work out a deal.

agreed.. it takes about 2 minutes to load each page.. a lot of the time it actually takes more time.. its getting annoying..

I administrate & maintain a few sites that are hosted on DreamHost. (don't pay for the hosting, but I have FTP access)

Pretty good if you ask me; fast download rates, etc...

I use site5 now, I've used them for a long time. I think you can even get higher than this plan if you talk to them with special circumstances but here goes...

110 gigs storage
5 TB bandwidth

I think that'd cover you. That is only 5$ a month, but if you really want the 5$ a month you go with like the two year deal, and it only ends up being 100$ and some change...

If you email sales@site5.com you can tell them your special needs and maybe see about getting your own server, or share a server with fewer people.... I'm sure they'd land you a dedicated server. They just partnered up with some big place to land all of the top of the line hardware..... Try them out Ben...

A dedicated server would be best, but over budget i'd say. I saw GoDaddy can do virtual dedicated servers, theres a 'Preconfigured Deluxe Plan' 20G space, 1000Gb transfer, $50/mth ($44 if payed yearly)

I'd guess virtual dedicated server would be faster then the shared hosting that the cheaper plans do.
